I have actually been a strong advocate for us switching to a 3-3-5, like WVU runs. This would allow us to keep DB's on the field and Roy Williams could fill against the run from a RS alignment.

Something like this:

........Canty..Tank..Spears
......OLB.......James.......Ware
....................Roy
Henry....Hamlin....Watkins....Newman

This has the potential to put all our play makers on the field and in the position they need to be in. The number of different looks you could give from this formation could be devastating.

I'm talking a true 5-2. Not using lb's to play line. Below is my image:

What do you think? Stupid or mad genius. I wouldn't advocate this d for every down. But I think it presents a strong run defense as well as a devastating pass rush if we needed. We could still have Fergie and Bowen to back up the linemen plus Roy w and reeves and ball and draft picks etc to back up the secondary. I think it's a great idea. :D

This is why we are not coaches, but instead we just post it. :D

@ the madden thing lol my friend does that if you play with the cowboys he should be able to avoid the rush.

If you talk to some older coaches that ran the 5-2 most of them say the 5-2 and 3-4 are basically the same defense. Just different terms.

Fixed it..

I think you watched Chris Collinsworth on INFL's segment on how to beat the Patriots.:D

We should use it occasionally but not every down with a few changes or at least experiment with it. It will work but obviously not all the time as you mentioned. You need faster Linebackers to help in coverage because they may go 5-wide, under your scheme Ellis would be a liability, plus he would dominate in the pass rush so he has to be on the end going in. I would bring in better DB's and get rid of the ones that stink. The corners would need to bump at the line and play tight, none of this 10 yd cushion stuff. Funny after watching that segment I thought of posting this exact thing...:D

This is how the Giants almost beat the Pats....

The difference is the 3-4 sacrifices a little size for the end guys, but that makes it more versatile if a team is passing. Smaller more athletic outside linebackers give the defense a better chance in coverage as opposed to bigger, slower ends in the 5-2.

Maybe but you just don't get the same kinda pressure as a 5-2..

Ellis as your LB in the 5-2? Youd need to quick guys like Burnett or something. Ware would work, but ud want him coming off the edge.

plus the middle will be wide open.

As a package? Yes. But like you said, as a every down base defense? No way. But I like the package to get on to the fields at time.

What do you do when say Pats go 3-4 wr and put Faulk in motion and have Watson at TE up and wide.

West Coast offenses and modern NFL made that stuff Dino 20+ years ago.

You want to go more radical in 2008?

Think 2-2-7
Front 4 with a Ware, Ellis at DE that can go up or down and shift with 7 DB's behind them, one that ate a Biscuit up a lot. Teams need to figure out Pats spread offense. And it's dropping into coverage and pressuring with FOUR.

Doubt he'll be as good as Ware but if we're asking, I'll take 2 or three more Wares, yes please.

There are quite a few teams (including us) who claim to have "almost beat Patriots", but yeah, there are quite a few QB's that have problems with the 3-4/5-2/whatever. It's been Peyton's Achilles Heel when he played us (when we broke their streak) and again this year against the Chargers.

In this defense, there is no middle to speak of. The dline has all the gaps filled and you still have your safeties in the middle that should make a short gain if the rb gets through that sea of arms.

Thank you, everyone, for posting. This has been fun. :D
