Looking around the NFL who do you think are 5 players who will arrive on the NFL scene, and what 5 players who have had some success suddenly come back to earth? Here are mine.

Five to Arrive
  1. Jay Cutler, QB, Denver Broncos. Going to be a top 5 QB in the AFC.
  2. Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders. Remember the Adrian Peterson hype? It's back in Oakland this year.
  3. Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans Saints. This won't be a popular pick, but he hasn't been used as he could be. This year they may have no choice.
  4. Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions. With back problems behind him he will become a matchup problem.
  5. Chris Long, DE, St. Louis Rams. My pick for Defensive Rookie of theYear. His non stop motor next to Adam Carriker is potentially lethal.
Five to Come Back to Earth
  1. Ryan Grant, RB, Green Bay Packers. No Brett Favre, questions at QB, key on the run.
  2. Kevin Boss, TE, New York Giants. I don't like Jeremy Shockey, but if Giants fans think Boss is comparable they are high.
  3. Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta Falcons. Going to find out it isn't so easy when teams are not keying on LT.
  4. Mario Williams, DE, Houston Texans. He won't be bad, but he won't repeat 2007.
  5. Derek Anderson, QB, Cleveland Browns. I may end up eating crow on this one, but they'll play a tougher schedule this year and I think they'll come back towards parity levels.

Keith Rivers, LB, Cincinnati Bengals. I think he will have a similar impact as Patrick Willis.

This whole post made no sense but this one in particular was off...

I think Bush stays at mediocre level.
I think Mario Williams builds on last year. The Texans' d-line is going to be a strength this year.

Agree on Derek Anderson.
As long as Shockey's in NY, Boss will always be the 2nd TE. Don't think expectations are otherwise.

Turner ranks right up there with Barber, too. Both are gonna learn alot about being the lead dogs this year.

Don't know that Boss ever really left earth -- just 1 or 2 big plays - I do agree that if Bush can be outstanding in the right rotation

I am sort of rooting for Anderson (except for week one) maybe he has a Romo like career. But most of all I want to see what happens if he has a great season and what happens with quinn. I wish it was happening now during this NFL news drought.

Five to Arrive
  1. Julius Jones: Julius is the type of running back that gets better as he gets more carries. He should average around 20-25 carries in Seattle. This could be his best season production wise.
  2. Vince Young: Even though the wide receiver positions were not seriously addressed in the offseason, the Titans did pick up TE Crumpler which should be a security blanket and main passing weapon for Vince. RB Johnson should also be effective with screens which should open up the passing game.
  3. Jonathan Stewart: I think Stewart will have a huge season in Carolina, which is a team that loves to pound the ball. Carolina has missed the power running game ever since Steven Davis was cut. Paired with DeAngelo Williams, the Panthers should boast one of the better RB duos in the league.
  4. A.J. Hawk: He has two good seasons already, but I believe this year he really steps up as one of the top 3 linebackers in the NFL. Someone tell Urlacher to move over.
  5. Vernon Davis: It usually takes wide receivers three years to develop and make an impact. I think the same rule applies to Davis, who is entering his third season. He has all the physical ability to be the top TE in the league and I think he takes that first step this year.
Five to Come Back to Earth
  1. Eli Manning: I never bought into the hype that he all of a sudden learned how to manage games and matured as an elite quarterback. What I saw was the Giants game scheme to hide his deficiencies as a quarterback. I think those weakness will re-surface this season.
  2. Ryan Grant: No Brett Favre and the entire NFL keying on you does not bode well for Grant. He took teams by surprise last season but I think he takes a step back this year.
  3. Derek Anderson: He also took teams by surprise last season, but the Cleveland fans will soon start the cries for Brady Quinn again.
  4. Dallas Clark: It won't be talent that will hold Clark back, but it will be the return of Harrison and also more involvement by Gonzalez that will limit Clark's production this year.
  5. David Garrard: He had a magical season throwing 18 touchdowns and only throwing 3 interceptions. However, that will change this year. I'm not saying he will not be good, but I expect his numbers to return to league average.

Pretty good picks, but I have to disagree with ya on Anderson. I think Cleveland found a keep in him.:)

Anderson clearly did not end the season well. Not that that is all that rare for QBs....
So its hard to tell. He is in a good situation there: very good O line now, some very good receivers, a RB that can take some pressure off.
So realistically there is no reason he should not do well.
If he does start to slide, it will be a bad sign.

5 Arriving:
1. Marshawn Lynch - if he stays out of jail
2. Anthony Spencer - double digit sacks and an impact player this season
3. Chris Chambers - full off-season in Norv's O is going to have him being Rivers' Irvin
4. Brandon Marshall - Cutler will be better and is legit, and Stokely, Royal and Jackson will ease up the attention to Marshall.
5. Chad Jackson - If he can stay healthy, I think he will start opposite Moss with Welker in the slot and Jackson will finally realize all his promise

Busting:
1. Jason Campbell - won't finish the season as a starter; will dreadfully struggle to run the WCO and be even worse than he has been in the past
2. Earnest Graham - most of Tampa's offense could be on this list, but Graham is not nearly as good as his production last year
3. Green Bay recieving corps - going to struggle without farve; Grant too
4. Osi - No Strahan will leave Osi with a lot of attention; no, Tuck is not going to be an even replacement for Strahan
5a. Hasselbeck - his running game will struggle, and losing Alexander, his money kicker, and Hackett will hurt the team overall. I'm expecting a down year for them as they will finally play to their talent level, which just isn't that good.
5b. Garrard - as with Hasselbeck, I think the Jacksonville passing game will finally play to their talent level, which is not nearly as good as they did last year.

3 Teams that will be a lot better than they were last year:
1. Vikings - might have the best D to go along with the best O-line and RB; Jackson isn't that bad.
2. Bills - Edwards will be legit; they have talent and continuity
3. Panthers - Stewart is a huge addition, and if Delhomme can stay healthy, I think they will be a playoff team.

3 Teams that will be worse than they were last year:
1. Commanders - They been a fluke team every year under Gibbs; JC is awful and they will struggle mightly under Zorn--who is in WAY over his head.
2. Packers - The loss of Favre will make a dramatic effect
3. Titans - I have no idea how they won 10 games last year, but I'm pretty sure they won't do it again.

I definitely agree Osi is coming back to the earth, besides the loss of Strahan, he won't have another 6 sack game this year, so that inflated 13 sacks last year will look a lot more reasonable.

I disagree about Gerrard though, he's a very good QB. You don't "accidentally" throw just 3 picks in a year as a starting QB in the NFL.

I don't see how rookies can get in "come back to earth" or "arrive" lists though, that doesn't really make much sense. There's nothing to come back to earth from, and teams treat rookies in very different ways. A guy like Calvin got plenty of chances, but was out produced by Dwayne Bowe, not because Bowe is better.

I think Grant will end up a top 5 back this season. The first time I saw him with the Packers I was blown away. Then he goes on to tear it up -- I believe he was the most productive back in the league since the week he started.

He made their offense better, not the other way around. Major steal for them.

Remember Willie Parker? Came in there and set the world on fire, but a few years later, they draft a guy in the first round.

Not saying you may not be right, but there have been guys that popped out of nowhere, looked like superstars and just ended up being productive, better than average backs.
