5 Things to Know about DE David Irving’s New Offer

Irving has played only two seasons in the NFL, so he didn’t have enough years to be an unrestricted free agent. Because he has played only two seasons, his contract status was ‘exclusive rights free agent’. The Cowboys had to decide whether to keep him (tender him a one-year offer), or let him go. The decision had to be made before the March 9th deadline when free agency begins. So heck yeah, they kept him. This was a no-brainer.

Irving’s tender offer is worth $615,000 for one season. If he continues to grow into the player the coaches think he can become, that is a real bargain. Irving has so much promise; he just needs to show consistency.

The tender offer means that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli will have “Dino” (as in ‘Dino the Dinosaur’) around for another season. Coach Marinelli is not great at remembering names of young players, so he gives nicknames. Irving is really tall (6’ 7”) and lanky. Coach Marinelli refers to him as “Dino” which means that the coach must have watched a lot of the Flintstones cartoons. Irving is only 23 years old, so the only thing he knows about The Flintstones would be from Cartoon Network...

If he starts the first half of the season on fire, that man will have a 4 year contract thrown at him before week 9, for some sweet money.

If he's ever going to motivated to be consistent and be a true player, it will be this season. He's playing for potential huge money. But I don't have a ton of faith it will materialize.
