3 of the 10 made it with QBs in the $10-15M cap hit range. Only one has made it with their QB taking a significant amount of the team's cap space.

2018. Goff on a rookie contract
2017. Wentz on a rookie contract/Foles 1.6M cap hit

2016. Matt Ryan on a big contract ($24M cap hit)
2015. Cam on first year of new contract ($13M cap hit)
2014. Russ on rookie contract
2013. Russ on rookie contract
2012. Kaep on rookie contract

2011. Eli on a big contract ($14M cap hit)
2010. Arod on a rookie contract
2009. Brees on a modest contract ($10M cap hit)

What gets overlooked a bit it yea it's nice and sweet if your QB on a rookie deal can get you a Super Bowl, but you still going to pay, likely on the backend. Russell Wilson has two under his belt and 2019 is another contract year, giving a his THIRD contract. One agent recently tweeted he could be the first QB to break $40M a year.
Hell, another agent projected Mahomes could be the first $200M QB in 2020 or 2021.

what percentage of total cap was the QB hit? the numbers from 5 years ago don't matter any more.....14 mill in 2014 was 11.5% of the total cap.

It’s interesting to me that once the QB signs the big deal the teams don’t make it back to the big dance or win it. It’s a trend. There was an article a few weeks ago that said we may see teams start trading QBs at the end of their rookie deal. Makes some sense. I think Brady makes less than $20M because he wants to win. Rodgers signs a deal close to $40M and people wonder why Mike McCarthy can’t coach any more. Maybe Rodgers taking so much money had something to do with it too...

Which even makes things worse for us Cowboys fans. We never got there when Romo was cheap. He signed his big contracts and we could never get over the hump. Same might happen with Dak.

This tells me that having film on a QB is a major component to defenses being able to stop a previously thriving QB.

All of those have seen their production drop a bit at least once in their career. Kaepernick dropped WAY down. Wentz hasn't been resigned yet, but still..... he had a sizeable drop this year. Ryan puts up terrific numbers consistently, but his big contract is a reason why Atlanta went from 13-3 to 4-12 that year. Eli is... overdue for retirement. Cam... numbers wise has had his best season this year since 2015, but he had mediocrity in between.

I think it's more about having lots of film on a QB than a big QB contract forcing other players on the team to be released, even though both definitely matters. This is why Dak dipped after his rookie year. And based on this thread, there are many more examples of his same situation.

Rodgers was not on his rookie deal, he signed an extension in 2008 (although I believe 2008 was the biggest cap hit year of the deal and that he was probably at worst a modest hit in 2010).

Stop paying QBs top dollar and draft one high every 3 to 4 years. That way, you can afford to have a really stacked squad around the QB on both sides of the ball.

Going to be funny when we have to pay Dak, Zeke, and Cooper a bunch of money and people are baffled why we are back in the crapper. NE stays relevant because they cut out paying skill positions a ton of money.

I'm telling you now, one of those guys need to go. You can't be paying Prescott 25 million, Zeke 14, and Cooper anywhere from 11-14 himself. Combine that with our offensive line and it's far too much of a cap hit on the offensive side of the ball.

Better hope we start hitting on multiple players in the draft to refill our defense - because if it's not offensive players going, it'll bet he defense.

Uh Cooper is most likely gonna average somewhere in the 18 to 20 million unless he decides to take significantly less than what he should. But yeah, let them walk so they can sign a bunch of 3rd tier free agents!

Except for major freak of nature events, Brees should have made it this year and maybe even last year. Rodgers absolutely should have been in in 2014 if you remember that game, plus A-Rod wasn’t on his rookie deal in 2010.

So there’s a lot of freak luck that even made these anomalies possible, and you’re not mentioning the AFC version because it’s the opposite. Top end, seasoned MVP-caliber QB is still the best chance of getting you there, this only confirms it.

In what world will he get that much? Go compare to how much Julio is making. He isn’t getting that.

Yeah, kill your cap on one side of the ball and allow your defense to go to crap because you can’t pay your guys.

You folks will never understand skill positions and how replaceable they are. You folks have no brain cells firing.

I would say Romo should've been there in 2014, not Rodgers or Wilson.

When you have the skill of bill belichek you can take a roster full of meat packers and the stadium janitor and go to the Super Bowl

Jason Garrett requires elite talent to get anything more than 4 wins So we probably have to pay through the nose for what talent we have

And I am telling you, if we do this, we will lose players on the other side of the ball. There is no getting around this.

And with this “elite talent” we have yet to get out of the divisional round.

At the time most of those QBs made it to the SB they weren’t elite either. Guess having a good overall team is as important as having an elite QB.
