The answer to your question, is yes...

I read that list and I tell ya... I got nothin'... just nothin'...

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][SIZE=-1]The Criteria:

1 - No duplicates on the list (franchise may only be selected once)
2 - All teams must have played in the NFL in the Super Bowl era (post 1967)
3 - All teams must have won a Super Bowl

question of whether cowboy teams of the 90s are better. maybe so, maybe no. i think the '71 team was better, myself.

much bigger question is the 1972 dolphins. i still think that team is way overrated. i agree that 17 in a row was quite a feat. however, beating the skins in the SB was not that big a deal since only the Commanders of the same year were more overrated than miami. washington played their SB against dallas in the playoffs in 1972. frankly, i think the 72 cowboys could have taken the 72 dolphins by a touchdown. any team on this list could take the 72 dolphins by a touchdown.

I am a fan of the old teams as well, but the sheer size and speed of the players today would make teams of the late 80's and earlier simply overmatched...

and I agree about the '72 Dolphins...

My question is as follows:

If Chicago is the best team of all time, and they won their SB before the advent of Free Agency, why did they win only 1 SB. All thse other teams on the list won at least another SB, or played in 1 at the very least with the same core group of players.

My point is, if the 86 Bears are the best team of all time, why werent they that good in 85 or 87.

I don't agree with this list but I do believe the 71-72 Cowboys were better then the 90s teams. I believe that that team was the best Cowboy team we've ever put on the field. JMO of course.

It's a tough decision... the skill position players were amazing on both squads...

My tie-breaker is the sheer speed to size ratio of today's players...

When Cliff Harris answered our questons here last year, he said the '77 team was the better team, hands down...
You played on alot of great teams in the 1970s. I read a book a while back, where Staubach indicated that he felt the 1978 team was the best, what are your thoughts and do you think that team could beat any of the clubs from the 1990's?

Both the 1971 and the ’77 teams were great teams. the 71’ team was built from heart and frustration. Made up an veteran group of the original cowboys that had never one the big one. I was a second year guy that was sucked into their wave. The ’77 team was a dominating team made up of old and new. It was an overall more talented team that could have stood up to many championship teams over a long period of time.
We all have our opinions...

I don't judge teams based on how the outcome of play would turn out if they played one another. To me, it's an impossible comparison. The game it self has changed too much from one era to the other to be able to do that. However, I look at each team position by position and I compare them in context to there own time frame and I do believe the 71-72 team was better. The 77-78 team was very good as well and I am not surprised that Cliff Harris would say that. That was also a very good team but I don't think that position for position, it was as deep. Here is a thread that kinda discusses the same thing.

This is all you can really do. No matter what the sport is, you can't cross eras to compare teams, you have to judge players by their contemporaries. If we judged Babe Ruth by Barry Bonds, he'd just be an outstanding power hitter - put him up against his contemporaries and he is the best baseball player ever.

How the '92 Cowboys aren't on that list is just dumbfounding.

Yeah, I kind of agree. You know, as I said earlier, I do beleive the 71-72 team was the best we ever fielded but I also believe that the 92 team could have beaten any team in history 8 out of 10 times if you could do it. That OL was simply overpowering. It could not be stopped by any defense I've seen before or since. Mind numming how this is never acknowledged but hey, it's not a scientific thing. That team made a habbit of beating the crap out of the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden Boy Brett Favre. Two things that are known Tabos. What can one expect?

The 1993 Dallas Cowboys were the best team ever, and that's simply the end of any discussion. For them not to be on this list is an outrage, they would easily beat everyone on that list but the 89 49ers and the 1985 Bears.

The Bears vaunted defense never faced an offense like that team had, though.

I personally think the 93' Cowboys were better than the 92' Cowboys. In 93, if Emmitt played the entire season, and not for Lett's hiccup;), we could have finished 15-1.

Talk about a mochery of a list. 85 bears please. The 93 cowboys can take out any team in the history of the league. My criteria for a great team is as follows. Schedule, hall of famers, wins, on and off the field distractions, who they beat in the super bowl, and how they won their games(by that I mean in convincing fashion or barely). The 93 cowboys won 12 games with injuries to Troy and Emmitt, Emmitt's holdout, 0-2 start, everyone said they couldn't do it, they beat a team that went to 4 consecutive super bowls, and will end up with atleast 5 or 6 hall of famers. The only niner team that impresses me is the 89 team. The steelers IMO are way better than them. The 71 cowboys won 11 games, if they had one more than yes. The 72 dolphins played most of their season without their hall of fame quarterback. Thats impressive. The 96 packers, give me a break. The only reason they won that super bowl is because the cowboys didn't win enough games during the regular season due to Irvin's suspension and didn't get to the nfc title game otherwise we would of sent them home like we did 3 straight years prior to that. This list sucks. The 93 cowboys, 03 patriots, and the 76 raiders are 3 teams that I would put the bears, packers, or skins.

Either one of those teams is easily better than the 1996 Packers. The 96 Cowboys shut down the 96 Packers and that 96 team was a shell of the teams of 92 and 93.

91 skins at #4 is nice.

Dallas beat them toward the end of the season and played a very close game at the beginning. If Emmitt doesn't get dehydrated and miss the 2nd half, Dallas wins. And that 91 Dallas team was not near as good as the 92 team that added Charles Haley and Thomas Everett and drafted Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson.

Some personal opinions.

* I think the 92-95 team was a better team overall than 1971, as a product of their continuity. I think 77-78 better than 1970-1971 as well. Plain and simple, better QB, and overall a more trustworthy RB.
* I think the 1979 Steelers were in decline. The earlier 1970s teams were better.
* I'd be hesitant to claim the 1996 Packers were really better than the 1966 Packers.
* I don't think the 1972 Cowboys could have beaten the 1972 Dolphins. I think the 1971 Cowboys would have given the 72 Dolphins a good run for their money. And lest ya'll forget, the 1973 Cowboys did play the 1973 Dolphins and lost.
* I think you have to win more than one to be considered "best of all time." The Bears won one.
* Trying to pull "the best" team out of all this is almost a mystifying operation, since all these teams played with substantially different rules. The 1972 Dolphins were almost never passed on because their cornerbacks cut receivers down right at the line of scrimmage. The 1972 Dolphins would get whipped playing the 1999 Rams using 1999 rules. The 1999 Rams might have suffered greatly if you took away their steroids and made them play by 1972 rules.
* I would have dearly loved to have seen Staubach play with the modern passing rules.

David.
