9 Thoughts after win 5

My meaningful thoughts:

1. Bills capitalized on Romo's and Garrett's desire to work the ball down the field (level 2 and beyond). Short patterns and check downs were open all day. Romo doesn't like to check down and the pre-snap movement of the backers was confusing him. Also, the lack of a pure speed RCVR deep threat is going to hurt us as the season goes on (I don't think Glenn comes back). And I do believe lack of a speed RCVR hurt us last night. Also, it took us (Romo? Garrett?) too long to figure out their Pass D scheme and make adjustments (really not until the 4th quarter did we start to hit the backs and short crosses).

2. Our Rushing game on O is becoming a problem. We haven't been able to run the ball early in any game this year. The OL isn't doing a great job but I stand by my opinion that we need a better, more elusive running back to compliment MB. On our first play from scrimmage, as an example, JJones could not make one slow Dlineman miss or he had 5-6 yards. MB danced too much last night as well. Don't point out the 2-3 decent runs JJ had last night -- every single RB in the NFL (1st, 2nd and 3rd string) will make some decent runs given 15 carries a game. Paul Palmer had some good runs. So did Hambrick. So did Aveon Cason who can't get on the field for anyone.

3. The D pursues well and has reached a decent rythym, although against poor competition. Our pressure was pretty good. I really like our LB core now. Bradie James is having a great year. Besides Ware, he has been our best D player this year (partly because tnew has been out). Bradie will get beat on some passes but he is a hard hitter, much quicker this year and makes plays behind the LOS. He is the leader of the D in my opinion (more aggressive personality than Ware, Williams or Tnew).

4. Carpenter isn't quick enough laterally to ever be a serviceable NFL LB. He is more disappointing then Spears who can at least occupy space and pile on top of a sack occasionally.

5. It is time to give someone else a shot at kick returns. TT isn't doing anything.

6. Sorry guys but TO just doesn't have good enough hands for me. When the game is on the line, I believe we should go to Crayton or Witten. TO made a great catch (the leaping grab) but the one he missed after the onside kick was a pretty basic grab. The 2 point conversion pass in the end zone was underthrown but he has to make that catch. He drops too many balls, period.

7. ESPN coverage was annoying. It usually doesn't bother me, but last night was overbearing. They were acting like it was the greatest upset of the century.

8. Romo was obviously embarrassed after the game. But it is probably ok. It will make him refocus and think harder about the scheme the opposition is playing and not try to force the things he prefers to do. He needs to be more patient.

9. Does Folk remind you a little of Vanderdrunk with the tight hair cut (shaved in Folk's case), the diamond earring and the cocky demeanor? Come on, you know he does. Little cocky dude is on fire - right down the middle on almost every kick this year.

I definitely agree with this. If we don't improve we are going to see way too much of the passing game. We never made Buffalo respect the run and it was very dangerous. I think the problem is a combination of the OL and the backs.

If we want a change of pace back to MBIII in the offseason on the cheap, Tatum Bell would be an excellent choice. He's got breakaway speed and is light on his feet to step out of tackles.

I agree about the comments on the receivers - no TO on clutch plays, generally slow of feet.

With the slow feet abound, I don't know who could replace TT on kickoffs. The plantar has slowed down Tnew - as evidenced by his interception return. Though he was quick in stepping up to make tackles.

I really enjoyed the ESPN crew last night. Sure they were getting caught up in the underdog story a bit - their entire non-Cowboy audience was too - it didn't bother me. Early on, Korn was really bugging Jaws about being from Buffalo.

Folk is cocky. Any dude that shaves his head and wears a 2 carat diamond stud in his ear has a little 'tude.

I don't think Folk was cocky at all. He gave props to everyone from the line, to the snapper and holder. He mearly said what was going through his head at the moment of the second kick. "I just told myself 'it's the same kick, do it again'". Vandershank would have taken all the credit.

cocky=negative
confident=good

you are confusing the two I believe.

and to your point 5 I believe about TT, he gives us better than touchback field position pretty much ever return, I like that, we all know he isn't going to break one, but he is damned consistant and doesn't screw up trying to make miracles happen.

Who else thinks Folk has a chance to make the Pro Bowl? He's been perfect so far except for the block against the Bears, which wasn't even his fault.

Or am I getting ahead of myself? From now on, I no longer fear kicking FG's. I don't think I've ever had that feeling, ever.

I think highly successful kickers in the NFL have to have that cocky and very optimistic attitude---kicking is mental.....hell, Jauron was playing mind games with our young kicker by calling a TO . We have found out how mentally tough our kicker is now. Tell me you're not comfortable with him in a close playoff game!

Unfortunately, I agree with you on Carpenter.....beginning to look like there is no position for him other than the bench. He looked slow mentally and physically last night.

Folk is a little cocky.
Cocky isn't always bad. Cocky is confidence with a little bit of an attitude.
Too much cockiness can be bad.

Really good post -- agree with almost all of it.

One thing that isn't getting talked about a lot is our run defense. I really thought with this new pressure scheme that we'd get gashed from time to time on the run. That's one area where I thought Parcells' old two-gap system would be better, maybe much better -- run defense. But teams can't run the ball on us. We gave up 71 yards last night, not including the fake punt. Outstanding.

But no, Folk doesn't remind me of Vanderjagt. Folk makes his kicks.
