I do not think that the talent SD has on the D line is all that much better then ours. NT they definitly have a big edge, but Fergie is pretty good. DE- I think that the TALENT is here, but has not produced.
I agree. Jamal Williams was not nearly as heralded before Wade got there. Not that he isn't great, because he is. But he wasn't a guy who dominated from the first day he entered the league. And Fergy is pretty good, too... I think he's closer to Williams than some might think.

And like you said, I think our DEs *can* be about as good as SD's. Spears we know has lots of talent -- just as much as Castillo. if he keeps his motor running, he can be just as good. Of course, that's a big if. The DE I wonder about is Canty. This will be a new system for him, and Olshansky is very solid and probably stronger than Canty. But maybe I underestimate Canty.

Of course, I think Ware is just as talented as Merriman. Even at worst, I say he's 90% of Merriman.

IMO where we might really lack is at the other LB spots. How will Ellis do? We don't know. I doubt he'll be as good as Foley or Phillips. Spencer should that good be in time, but probably not right away. ILB is where I think we might really come up short compared to SD. Donnie Edwards was athletic and could cover, plus he was so very smart. I don't think we have anyone like him. Even if Carpenter or Burnett eventually play that role, they don't have any experience yet.

I think Jason Hatcher will turn out to be better than all of them.

One criticism of the Phillips 3-4 defense is that the defense both makes big plays, and gives up big plays.

Meaning that the team attacks the passer, producing a high number of sacks, but giving up big plays in the passing game as well.

I'm wondering if the secondary in Dallas is more or less talented than the players Phillips coached in San Diego.

I believe the secondary is defintely better than the secondary in San Diego

On paper, I would think that the group the Cowboys have is better, but given their struggles in 2006, I'm not so sure so I'm looking for opinions.

I think it's a given that the Dallas front 7 will be more productive and put up better numbers.

But what about the secondary?

Will they be better or worse in 2007?

I don't think the secondary will be appreciably better, because the risk of giving up some big plays is still there because of the risk-reward factor of the scheme, but we'll cause more turnovers

good question

SD gave up big plays because there secondary failed. ours doesn't.
That will be interesting to see after the secondary play I saw post-Thanksgiving last year.
