We didn't want to pay big money for last seasons leading RB. Why would we want to pay big money for the leading RB from seasons ago? AP isn't coming here. It's silly to think so.

And then when Dallas doesnt make it to the super bowl next season... You can rant all offseason about how terrible the Cowboys coaches are because with their talent they should win back to back super bowls... It is those kind of expectations that make fans throw a fit when the cowboys arent winning them all.

Dream team type expectations. It is difficult enough to make the playoffs in the NFL. Saying one player is going to make the team a twobtime superbowl winner is just crazy talk.

We all know there is no guarantee of anything. It's more about which scenario gives your team the best chances to win the Super Bowl. Over the next 3 years Peterson does more to increase the chances than anyone we will draft late in the first round of 2016 draft.

That is fantasy football thinking and what Snyder used in signing Smith Sanders et al and promptly losing. There is no such thing as a sure thing particularly in the survival league that is the NFL.

Also let's not pretend that there is no risk that an aging RB who has been out of the league for a year might be cooked and be an albatross at this contract amount even if reduced. The draft is certainly not a guarantee but nor is veteran free agency. OTOH, the draft has the much more successful track record by which to build a team.

If we trade a first I will be annoyed.

This analogy falls flat. A better one that more closely resembles our scenario would be the Patriots going and bringing in Revis last year because they were so close the previous year and he provided a significant upgrade in an area of need. Both Peterson and Revis are HOF level players. Both play positions of need for these teams.

No fantasy football stuff. This is about how big of an upgrade would this player be over the players that he would be replacing and how much could that upgrade increase our chances of winning a Super Bowl.

You thinking of a corner that had success does not make AP a success story. Bruce Smith, Mario Williams, Cromartie, Asomugha, Herschel Walker, Jared Allen, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Carl Nicks, Logan Mankins, Steve Hutchinson, Julius Peppers, John Abraham, DEmarcus Ware, Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, Dashon Goldson, and Ty Law are all top FA that didn't pay off with pay dirt.

Fantasy football is exactly thinking of a big name that is a sure fire success. Thing is that moving fantasy teams is not the same as moving reality teams. When AP was prime with sure fire success with fantasy thinking Allen, Favre, and Allen they didn't win then either. AP is not such a difference maker that he takes his own team to the playoffs.

Using Revis as an example is a good comparison because the Patriots were very close to being a super bowl team. Of course no player will guarantee a Super Bowl no matter how good they are. It just doesn't work that way as I'm sure you are aware. We are not a team that is going out and making over the entire roster with superstar players. We are a team that lost the AP Offensive Player of the year who would be replacing his production with another AP Offensive Player of the year.

I just don't see the comparison to what Dallas is and what the Vikings were when they traded for Herschel Walker. We would be attempting to minimize a loss (Murray) by replacing him with a player who most consider to be a superior player in every way.

One player away thinking now. And thinking you can just plug one all pro for another and assume everything is going to be peachy is wishful fantasy football thinking. I just named you over a dozen all pros where that didn't happen.

Herschel Walker is a perfect example. The 1988 Vikings went 11-5 and had a top 5 offense and defense. They had won the wild card round and lost to SF in the division round. I imagine in their minds they were closer as their defense was pretty good. It was Wade Wilson's finest hour. With Walker in 1989 they finished worse and still lost to SF.

Also the Patriots signed Revis to a contract. They didn't give up picks for him. They traded a 4th for Randy Moss. If you want to model yourself after them or Baltimore then you learn the ethic of not spending top 100 picks for aging free agents. Instant gratification sees you broke and chasing your own tail.

You watched the GB game. Murray's fumble was his biggest impact on that game and he wasn't as good as he was earlier in the year. But even ignoring that, the biggest problem was the defense who couldn't cover the middle of the field and couldn't chase down the gimp.

Watch this video from his 2012 MVP season and tell me that he doesn't take this offense to another level. I'd give up a 28-32 next year for him.

I agree that our defense was an issue last season. We did everything we could do to improve this. It's not about Peterson vs defense. The defense has been addressed. Our decision to trade away a 2016 draft pick will not impact what our defense will do this year.

What it comes down to is Peterson will have the largest impact of any move we could possibly make for the next 2 seasons. I don't think many people really question if Peterson would be effective this year in our offense. We can agree to disagree on the fantasy football reference.
It's also not just about the 1 player away thought process since we already addressed the defense side of the ball. This league is too competitive to ever believe you are only 1 player away. However you still want to give yourself the best chance to compete for a Super Bowl. It's my thought that adding Peterson makes us a better team than we would be without him. Do you disagree with this statement?

I refuse to look at things as all in one year. Giving up top picks is not something that I think makes us a better football team particularly down the road. We will have a shot to get one this year reload next year and do it again. We are a very good football team on paper as it is with a very good player development program. I love that we now build through the draft and the days of trading top picks for skill positions are over.

This also does not preclude us from getting Peterson next year for nothing. I don't see that lasting long at those salaries. I still think it likely he is not there come September and the Vikes never get what they are asking. Sure as heck do not bid against yourself.

IT'S FOOLPROOF!

I love the video...but to be fair the 1988 Minnesota Vikings averaged 3.6 YPC as a team and had Darrin Nelson as the lead back. They brought in Walker to try and make up for not having an offense that could run the ball at all. We would not be asking Peterson to create a run game for us.

And we lost Demarco Murray! We must have Peterson and paying premiums for RB always work out.

Yeah, what superonyx said. Not only that, but we wouldn't be giving up a king's ransom for AD. Big difference. And we are closer now than minnesota was then.

That Minnesota defense was stacked. Doleman, Millard, Studwell, Solomon, Lee and Browner were very good players.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/min/1988_roster.htm

Lowdermilk, Zimmerman, and McDaniel were a good core for the OL. Wilson was coming off a career year and Carter and Jordan were probowl receivers for him. Looking at the roster the deficiency was RB exactly like we were and they made it just as far as us in the playoffs.

At the end of the day it comes down to price. 4th and a paycut or its not a good deal.

That's a nice video. But it is from 3 years ago, afterall.

Posting a highlight video of Jason Witten from 3 years ago doesn't mean he can still do those same things next year. He's still a nice player, but not the same as he was in his prime.

If that were the case, it would be a no brainer. I'd trade the entire draft for it.

how did that work out for Mike Ditka on New Orleans......and the Vikings trading for Herchel Walker didn't work out for them either

Why are the Cowboys likely to pick in that range?

Why are they not?

Where did we pick this year? I honestly forget now but it seems like 26 or 27.

Unless you think 12-4 was entirely on Murray and absolutely nothing else had anything to do with it why would it be so funny to think that the team could realistically be picking in the same area?
