A Cowboys insider says TE Anthony Fasano's development was slow for a second rounder, but that he improved last season.

Another scout said he's "a little spotty getting open, but he'll become more productive as a receiver." Fasano is not expected to stretch the field, but he's a better blocker and better overall tight end than incumbent David Martin.

This trade to Miami is still strange... I know that people have given what they think are reasons but it still smells a little fishy -- two players for a mid level pick. Odd.

two players for the first pick in the 4th round? You won't find many teams willing to give up that for two backups.

Better a fourth than nothing. My guess is that had they not been traded, Fasano and Ayodele would have been released.

Miami has done the Cowboys a lot of favors in my opinion with all of the players they have signed..

They were middle of the road players that were just taking up cap room, roster space and most importantly playing time from others who could develop into better players.

Understanding the trade is very simple to me. They were talking about trading Fasano and Jerry, knowing Akin was going to take practice reps and then be cut, threw Akin into the deal to assure the 4th round pick. Parcells asked for Carpenter instead of Akin, Jerry said no, Parcells said okay we'll take Fasano and Akin for our 4th. Thats it, plain and simple. Dallas had no plans for either player. Curtis was going to see more time than Fasano anyway and they had their eye on Bennett as a big upgrade to Fasano. They knew Akin was likely to be cut so who cares. The team wants Thomas to show Carpenter how to be a good pro and help him and Burnett develop into better players. Akin was the odd man out so they threw him in. Everyone keeps saying 2 starters for a 4th is robbery. Well, they're only starters on a bad 1-15 team. For Dallas, the deal was an aging backup linebacker coming off an average year and a 3rd string TE who didn't fit the system for the first pick in the 4th round. The deal never bothered me one bit from the second I heard it. What bothered me most was that Parcells blew another one of our high draft picks on a so-called Parcells type player and then split leaving us with some average players who no longer fit the teams style.

Funny how the Miami paper didn't report the bum shoulder, mental errors, and general lack of production.

Not saying it applies to the Fasano trade but does anyone remember Jerry saying that sometimes he'll let another team get the better end of the deal in order to encourage that GM to call again.

That was in a story I read on this site sometime this offseason. Interesting.

:starspin I "hope" that Thomas is able to show Carpenter how to be better players, I hope.

Yes he does big time.
I won't forget the dropped pass in the Giant playoff game. Everyone loves to bring up that Crayton drop but there was no guarantee even if he did catch it he was going all the way. The Fasano drop was either at the goal line or a TD. He catches that we don't have to settle for a FG. This was the 2nd long drive of the game that I believe they had to start the 2nd half. That drop was/has been bigger in my opinion.

I think Fasano is better than most are giving him. Akin was thrown in because he was not wanted here and we weren't going to get anything for him. He probably did swing the deal. Fasano wasn't going to bring that high of a pick to anyone but Tuna. Akin will add depth and may even start there. Here he would have been camp fodder.

more numbers nonsense.

romo is very, very accurate. hits fasano right on the numbers over and over jeez you can be legally blind and have a "high completion %" if you're given fasano's role.

now list the tough catches Fasano made in a big spot. (hint it will be very short)

now list the drops he had in big spots.

To have a completion, he has to catch the ball. Having a reasonably high completion percentage necessarily indicates that he catches a high number of the passes thrown at him compared to his peers.

It's really that simple.
