This article got me thinking about this years defense and beyond.
Yes, it's been dicussed in many different ways and threads already.
I feel when Parcells went to the 3-4, it would set us back for years, and basically it seemed to IMO. Players learning new systems, under different DC's, new head coaches. Then last year they go back to the 4-3, with yet another new DC. Injuries plagued them the entire season. Veteren players learning new schemes.
But now with Marinelli in place, and this was a great time to do it, getting rid of older players. Now the defense is basically entirely new, the drafted players, UDFA's, as well as some younger FA's, and those coming off of injuries themselves.
So now, they can all learn together, be molded into a defensive unit over the next few years. No veterens trying to learn something entirely new, yet again. Some players now into the 2nd year of the basically same defense. A few FA's familiar with this system. Kind of the early 90's, a lot of young players learning the same thing at the same time.
Not saying they are as talented, but then back in the 90's we weren't saying that either, we were all hoping they drafted some good players. That's all hindsight, even though many were higher round picks, but there were many castoffs too from other teams. The type most complain about today.
So I am looking forward to see how well and fast they come together. I don't expect them to go from #32 to a top 20. But to get to #25 isn't out of the question either. If that equates to a few more wins, that is all we need to win the East, as I do not see any other team making some great leap to be the favorite either.
Yes, it's 2 weeks before camp starts, and we, as every team, can have rose color glasses on, for those who will tear this down....
