It's nice that we can finally dissect and over analyze football again. A few notes on some players from the San Diego game:
Hardy didn't play a lot of snaps but you can already see his impact on the defensive line. He has the size and strength of a DT with the athleticism of a DE. It's a difficult combination to defend. I can't wait to see more of him in the coming weeks.
If you read my notes from last season I praised T.Crawford, especially once he moved inside to DT, but I think he will be even better with help from the edge rushers because it will be difficult to double team him. He's quick for a DT but he also shows power in his game.
Before the start of TC I was wondering who would be the primary backup 3T but after all the reports and finally seeing him in action it looks like Dallas found another gem in J.Crawford. Quick, does a good job knocking the OLs hands away, and is relentless. He showed a bit of everything against SD, penetration, run defense, and ability to get to the QB with the strip sack.
Gregory is fun to watch. Some people think he is going to struggle against the run because they look at his weight but that's not the case. He's strong enough to set the edge and can shed to make a play on the RB. That sack showed his speed to power when he pushed the LG in the QBs lap.
Russell looked good when he was inside. There were a couple of plays that he got a push on the OG and looked like he was held. Didn't notice him at LDE though.
I liked what I saw from D.Wilson. Looks quick at diagnosing and explodes to the ball. He did a good job eluding blockers or if blocked he quickly shed them.
La'el Collins looks like he will be a good player. Strong and plays with a nasty attitude. Moves surprisingly well on pulls and gets to the 2nd level easily. I'm not sure his lateral quickness is good enough to be a LT but could probably play RT well. There were plays when it looked like Weems and Collins weren't on the same page but that should be correctable with more experience. Overall there were some good and some bad but you have to be excited about the player.
I counted 4 plays when Marinelli brought out the pass rush package with the combination of Hardy, Mincey, T.Crawford, and Lawrence. 1 resulted in the draw TD but the other 3 plays had SD getting the ball out quickly. It's a small sample size but seeing the opposing team's QB not have a lot of time 3rd down was a welcome sight. I'm looking forward to seeing more snaps in the upcoming games.
Bernadeau and Collins look like two solid backups and McDermott didn't look terrible (if he gets stronger could be a backup C) but there are question marks at OT. Weems looks like he needs more snaps but should improve as the preseason wears on. If he doesn't I would start to worry about the swing tackle position. Wetzel and Dill aren't answers.
I really like our CB situation and think we have 6 legitimate players at the position.
I think we are at least 2 deep at all 3 LB positions.
Depth on the defensive line has a lot more talent, especially on the outside, than it did at this time last season.
