Going into this season I believe most here thought this was the best chance for a Championship in Romo's tenure as the leader. I was warming to that idea with all the hoopla about the defense getting better.
However, fate holds a grudge against this team. It started with the suspension of Hardy, even though it was reduced. McClain's injury/suspension, and continuing with Dez getting no reps in training camp. (This is significant because it is speculated by several former players on Dallas radio, along with Deion and Irvin, that his hamstring injury is directly related to him not practicing.)
Then disaster struck and Romo went down for seven games.
Here is the scenario/questions.
Can Weeden/Cassel win four out of the seven, leaving Dallas at 6-3 when Romo returns?
The schedule:
Home vs Atlanta Falcons
Away vs New Orleans Saints
Home vs New England Patriots
Bye
Away vs New York Giants
Home Seattle Seahawks
Home vs Philadelphia Eagles
Away @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Then the real speculation begins.
Can a Romo led team, with all the pieces in place and healthy, play the last six games of the season and go 4-2?
The reasoning behind these questions is this. 11-5 wins the division in most cases. Fact is Dallas might still be in first place when Romo came back.
If they can get to 11-5, then it is three games from a trophy. Run the table in the play-offs and the season is still what most considered a possibility.
But more than the Championship, what does that do for Garrett's rep, managing a team without the two stars on offense and a walking wounded defense while maintaining their equilibrium as Romo heals?
What does that say about Romo coming back from injury and taking his team to the promised land?
Hollywood writes these kind of stories.
I believe in Romo. I'm still sketchy on Garrett. But not as much as I am on Weeden. My feeling is Cassel has a skill set to manage a game. No flourish. No heroics. Just move the offense and put up enough for a defense to win a game.
I want another trophy or two before Romo retires. I believe he has the skill set to bring it. The team has the talent to deliver. If only Mistress Injury would get up off the backs of this team long enough to allow the talent to take over.
What say you? Is this possible?
