Four of us in my immediate family are vets. One of us even spent some time in Baghdad as a civilian helping the troops with the IED problem.

Thanks to all who served and who continue to serve as well as their families, and I wish all of those deployed a safe return home.

Air Force 2004-2008.

On a side note, I'm watching ESPN First Take and they're honoring the vets by doing their show on a Merchant Marine vessel. Just find that kinda confusing because they're considered civilians unless they get called up by the Navy in wartime. And the kids on the ship are all recent graduates. Does anyone else find this kinda weird?

Not really, probably better than a gym or football field. The Merchant Marine is clearly civilian, but is somewhat interlocked with the military during wartime. During WWII, 1 in 24 civilian sailors on merchant ships were lost. That was a higher percentage than any of the armed services, i.e. Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force. It wasn't higher than the diesel submariners lost in WWII, though. 1 in 5 went to the bottom with all hands. I served on the nuclear versions - much more comfortable and capable of carrying considerably more firepower.

First off, thanks to all Vets past and present.

Per the Merchant Marine...my uncle was a Lieutenant on an LST in Vietnam and I remember him talking about all of the scrapes that the MM ships had close to shore. In WWII, their valor and casualty rate was unquestionable.

WWII

Service Number serving War Dead Percent Ratio
Merchant Marine 243,000* 9,521** 3.90% 1 in 26
Marines 669,108 19,733 2.94% 1 in 34
Army 11,268,000 234,874 2.08% 1 in 48
Navy 4,183,466 36,958 0.88% 1 in 114
Coast Guard 242,093 574 0.24% 1 in 421
Total 16,576,667 295,790 1.78% 1 in 56

Amen. Thanks to all who risk their lives to protect our freedom so that we can enjoy all that we have. I have a couple family members in the military and know how much they sacrifice. Considered joining the Army myself last year. And to those posters who are military or former military, I salute you! Thanks again and God bless! U-S-A!

I love how you Americans appreciate the military.

Wish it was the same here in my country, but we are too stupid in this part of the world. We take freedom for granted. Don't want to make it political, though.

Thank you.
