The bottom line is the Eagles are not as smart as some would make them out to be with their cap space. They simply are willing to roll the dice and worry about the cap at some point in the future.
Which is, as their results have shown, smart.

When the Eagles are being touted as the model to follow and now I'm realizing that their previous smart decisions have since been replaced by high risk doubling-down gambles, the last thing I want is for the Cowboys to follow that mess forward.

Prior to 2024, the Eagles drafted better, traded better and spent better than the Cowboys. They were a solid example of how to build a championship team.

I really hope the Cowboys don't follow along with 8 to 10 year contract durations for 3 to 4 year contracts.
OK. What do you hope they do? If it’s continue along as they have been the moment the Eagles crash and burn they’re more likely to be replaced by Washington or perhaps New York. Coming in 3rd place while the Eagles come in 4th is success of some kind, I suppose.

You really should read more of my posts in this thread.

I'm not saying they were not smart pre-2024. Just the opposite in fact.

What I'm talking about is 2025 though and their new contracts.

You created a definition for child's game to fit your rant. If its for children, then go watch or help that Amazon driver instead of tuning in every week. Its entertainment. Its sport. By your definition anything that doesn't have an impact on the "real world" is for children. So I guess sports journalists have a child's job. Every actor, musician, or artist also have professions for children.

You see how dumb that sounds? I'm guessing you won't, grandpa.
Trying to throw barbs just because I don't agree with your mild way of thinking. Just goes to show your lack of intelligence. Enjoy living vicariously through athletes while you have a blooming dad bod wasting away on the sofa.

Lack of intelligence is ignoring facts and trying to argue with emotion. You've mastered that, grandpa

Actually the lack of intelligence is lacking the maturity to disagree agreeably. But you have mastered that spare tire you have around your waist. Enjoy the family size bag of Doritos and children's games on Sunday.

The problem is, their strategy only backfires if the salary cap stops from increasing

People in here said the same thing about them signing Carson Wentz to a huge mega contract. He helped them win a SuperBowl in 2017 or 2018 or whatever year they did, and then his play nosedived, right after they made him the highest paid player in league history

But then.... they COMPLETELY rebuilt the team and were back in the playoffs with an extremely young team just a couple years later, back in the SuperBowl a year after that, and back in the SuperBowl 2 years after that and won it

And they are a top favorite to go again this year. And they'll likely have this core of players for years more.

it's just the weirdest, weakest flex for the Zaney Zoners in here to look at them and go "they're not as smart as you think" based on these contracts. THATS IDIOTIC!! Their plan has worked to perfection. 3 Superbowls in 8 years, including 2 wins? I mean, short of going on a Tom Brady 2 decade long dynasty run, what more could they have hoped for with their plan?

We just keep failing decade after decade...yet our fans still keep regurgitating Jerry Jones mantra: "it will catch up to them sooner or later"

No it won't! Not if they keep drafting like they are, and getting the players they get. Wishful thinking is what losers do. Jerry is just too dumb and old to figure out how to run teams like the young guys do, so he keeps plodding along like it was 1992.

THEY AREN'T AS SMART AS PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE! LMAO!!!!!

I get it. He's an all-pro caliber wr in the prime of his career stuck in an offense that isn't built to showcase him....... with a Qb that really isn't a great passer. He has his ring. Now he wants to have some fun and catch footballs.
I don’t understand what they are doing with him. They used to eat off of those 8 yard slants to AJ which were almost impossible to stop and that play seems to have disappeared from their playbook. I don’t get what the OC is doing??

I just looked at his contract .. now I'm starting to understand how Philadelphia is paying out the large contracts without any issues.

They gave AJ Brown a 10-year deal. The last 4 are voided so they could spread out his cap hit over 10 years instead of the 6-years (technically) his contract covers.

That said, at its core the contract signed last year (2024) is a 3-year contract for $96 million.

So, they basically signed him to a 3 year extension by giving him a 10 year contract.

If the Eagles release/trade Brown this year, they would get hit with up to around $90 million (less amount paid so far this season) dead cap hit.

If the Eagles release/trade Brown next year, they would get hit with a $72 million dead cap hit.

The bottom line is the Eagles are not as smart as some would make them out to be with their cap space. They simply are willing to roll the dice and worry about the cap at some point in the future.
We also have to remember the Eagles keep kicking the can down the road with the knowledge that the salary cap increases every single season.

If they ever have to eat some of these massive contracts with a release or trade, the bite out of the cap won't be quite as bad as it looks now.

Oh, I don't care what they do or don't do. I just don't want to see the Cowboys follow them down that rabbit hole.

I am concerned that with the mindset of Jerry being "help is coming" and "we're almost there" combined with this age that he might gamble the team's future.

The flaw with the "salary cap will keep increasing" mindset is that 1) some day it might not, but more importantly, 2) because of how they structured the contracts they will most likely have to keep restructuring them long before the cap catches up.

Meaning, they've started a chained event process where the cap increase they gain is more than offset by the contracts they offered (at that time) years ago they have no choice but to restructure.

We also have to remember the Eagles keep kicking the can down the road with the knowledge that the salary cap increases every single season.

I addressed this in my other posts. The problem is not how they used to do contracts, but rather what they just started doing last year.

My other posts explain it in more detail.

I rather be the eagles and win a Superbowl and probably will be really competitive in the playoffs this year, then to be like Jerry Jones, scared to sign a big time FA's and we just end up being good enough at best to make it to the playoffs but not good enough to make it to even the NFC championship game in the last 30 years.

So what if they have 5 Dallas Cowboys style years where they mainly have to rely on the draft to get good talent and to offset some of the spending to lower contracts aka bargain bin shopping.
Fine, but that isn't the discussion

If they want to win they should follow JJs lead and have 3, 12-5 seasons in a row. That’s how winners do it.

brown will not have to worry about his numbers next week he will get the ball plenty of times against the cowboys defense.

That is literally what being smart with cap space is. You decide on your window, go for it during that window, have a bad year, and then do it again.
Exactly. And they have been to 3 Super bowls in the last 8 years winning 2... if you told me we could have that but would have to risk some big camp numbers down the road i would scream "sign me up"

I addressed that in one of my other posts. The problem is that the large dead cap hits are unavoidable for 3+ years on those contracts regardless of those option bonuses that can be avoided.

The real issue though is that those contracts (and possibly others) will force the Eagles to restructure/extend them over the next few seasons (likely multiple times) so by the time year 3 or 4 of the current contracts happen, they will have pushed the money down the road yet again while adding to the amount owed.

Meaning those contracts will not make it possible to leave them as-is. My guess is they will start restructuring them as soon as next year which is another reason why there are so many voided years.

It's like the example I gave of getting new credit cards to make payments (not pay off) current debt. At some point, you have to get more credit cards to make payments on the credit cards you got last time to make payments.

I think the Eagles got used to pushing cap issues to 3-4 years in the future, which many teams do, but instead of dealing with them as most teams do at some point, they doubled down and started pushing them 5 to 6 years in the future.
How do you restructure a contract when you are paying league minimum salary which is augmented by an option bonus. There is no salary to convert. Take Hurts for example, His salaries for the next 4 years are, $1.125 million, $1.17 Million, $1.215 million and $1.4 million. All his compensation from from roster bonuses. In effect, the Eagles have restructure contracts in advance with the option to avoid paying out some of the money if they move on from the player.

Look at the Eagles contracts. In 2025 Jordan Davis is the only player making over $2 million in salary. Next year is is one of two. The other is Nolan Smith Both are on the rookie contracts.

As someone who drafted him in the second round I’m frustrated too

It's a 3-year contract masked in a 10 year deal, so, after 3 years (2027) the dead cap hit for the Eagles would be $27 million (I believe) regardless if they trade or release him.

I believe future option bonus money would transfer to his new team should the Eagles trade him as that's a "if on roster after this date, current team owes this money to player" option.

I am guessing the Eagles plan was that Brown would play 3 years, then they would trade him to another team and take the $27 million cap hit in exchange for draft picks.

I doubt they were expecting Brown to already start causing issues early in year 2 of his contract.
That would seem like the likely plan for him. Sometimes you get it wrong. Our team has done that plenty of times.
