I may be relocating to Dallas short term to work for Fannie Mae. I would have to work out of their office downtown but have no idea about logistics. Are there apartments downtown? Is it a place I could live and work or would I need to commute. Is it a safe environment? If I lived and worked downtown could I get by without a vehicle.

I will probably be flying back to Florida on the weekends if this comes together so I just need the bare eseentials to make it work.

Any ideas???

There are tons of apts in the uptown area. Its only a few miles from downtown, but its pricey. Anything in the downtown/uptown area is pricey. Uptown is an awesome community though. Very safe. Very ritzy.

There are also several downtown apts, but if you have the cash, you would prefer uptown. Downtown dallas is ok, but its not as vibrant as uptown. Its still very safe though as downtowns go though.

Getting by without a vehicle would be rough. The public transportation system isn't bad, but this is a HUGE metroplex. Lots of land, so instead of building up, people build "out". Having a car, even a cheap one would make your life so much better. There's not alot of shopping downtown here, so just getting to a grocery store would be difficult. Not true in uptown though. You could take a bus in uptown to go downtown, but I still think a car would be a thousand times better. And whatever car you get, make sure it has air conditioning, or you'd probably just put a bullet in your head by mid june.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

thanks cowboyway for the info. I am still working thru the process to see if I want to go there. Even tho it is only termporary it would be tough. I have never been away from the wife over night much less weeks at a time. I may have serious separation anxiety. Maybe I will bring my dog....

I moved here about 15 years ago or so, from New Mexico. I love the city. I can't stand the weather, and I'm a bit of an outdoors guy, so I have some issues with the way the state runs their hunting and fishing, and the fact that there are no mountains here really bothers me.

But if you're not into the outdoorsy thing, and don't mind hot weather, Dallas is pretty tough to beat all things considered.

Not into outdoor things anymore. I went fishing every weekend when I lived in Louisiana and have not put the first hook in the water since moving to Fla in 1987. The hot I can deal with. I live on the Equator or similar heat anyway in Florida.

I have to decide in the next week. they would want me to start October 1. and that is just a little quick. I guess I could live in a van. Are there any rivers close-by.

just found out that my contact with the company was wrong about the location. It is not located downtown but located on the Dallas Parkway, I think real close or even next to the galleria. Is that north, south, close to the stadium, in the boonies, or where. I would think there should be hotels or apartments around there wherever it is.

Dallas Parkway is the Tollway here. Yes there are apartments all down the Parkway. It is consider North Dallas and yes it runs by the Galleria. The stadium is in Arlington, Texas which it is about 1 hr. drive from the North area of Dallas. They are rebuilding around the Galleria and have nice apartments right next or close too it.

Is it really that far? My mom lives in FW, close to Arlington, and I had a friend lived in N. Dallas. Never seemed to take that long to get there. 30-45mins max. Maybe it just depends on the time of day.

I think the only time it took longer was when I got lost trying to drive back from there at 3am. The last thing you want to do is find yourself tired on 635 trying to get back to FW.

Maybe 45 minutes, but game day or any special event going every bit of hr. Traffic is terrible here going that way now.

I can believe that. Game days have always been brutal...even when they were in Tx Stadium.

Hey do you know what the ETA is on construction for Collins and I-30?

It is closed right now. I don't know when they are going to complete it. My mother said it is a mess right now. She lives in Grand Prairie about 10 minutes from the stadium.

Yeah I knew that. My mom lives off I-30 less than 10 mins away. A friend and I tried to get to that Waffle House on other side of Collins and it took forever to get over there because I forgot they'd closed off the bridge. Talk about big PITA.

I just hadn't seen the latest updates on when they were going to complete construction. Hopefully soon, cuz it's scary driving that part of I-30 at night.

You guys are making me homesick LOL. I lived in Dallas for 36 years before moving to Tampa bay about a year and a half ago. So listening to guys describe the area is causing me to visualize it.

:D
