On display in front of the Scouting Offices/Draft War Room inside team headquarters at The Star in Frisco is the “Rookie Contracts” display. It goes all the way back to the very first player draft pick in team history: defensive tackle Bob Lilly from TCU (1st round in 1961, #13 overall). Lilly, the Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor member known as “Mr. Cowboy,” received a $4,000 bonus and a base salary of $13,000.

The Navy Midshipman had to fulfill his military commitment before starting a pro football career. He was not selected until the 10th round (#129 overall). Staubach received a $10,000 bonus and $25,000 salary, but he didn’t join the Cowboys until the 1969 season when he finished his military service, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Garrison was drafted in the 5th round in 1965 and his salary was $18,000.

Troy Aikman, the #1 overall pick of the 1989 draft, received the largest rookie contract in NFL history...
