A missed opportunity that may be a blessing in disguise

So after reading the MMQB thing on the Cowboys' draft process, I think that Jerry did some overthinking and let some unfounded fear rule his decisions.

Mainly, not taking the Baltimore trade of swapping #4 for #6 and picking up their 4th rounder. I think it's pretty clear that neither the Ravens nor the Jags were going to take Elliott. I think that was a missed opportunity for extra value (and to lessen Elliott's cap hit over the next five years).

But I think it may have been a blessing in disguise as well. If we picked up that extra 4th rounder, there's a good chance that we would have used that as more fuel to trade up for Lynch. Maybe with the extra high 4th, we feel like we can give up our 2nd and 3rd rounder to go get Lynch, or maybe we give up our 2nd and two 4ths to go get Lynch. And either way, I think that would have been a mistake.

I like the idea of Jaylon/Collins/Prescott more than Paxton Lynch. I could be wrong and Lynch may be a stud. But with that wonderlic and with that breezy attitude, I just can't see the dude making it. He seems like Jay Cutler 2.0 to me. I like the package we got instead.

So I think we blew a golden opportunity in a silly way. But I think missing out may have saved us in the end.

Stephen Jones and Ozzie Newsome are fairly good friends.
Stephen said that after the fact he asked Ozzie who they were taking and Ozzie said Zeke.

It did sound like Dallas was originally expecting the Ravens to take Ramsey if a trade went through.

Other than that, yes, I agree that Zeke plus a 4th > Zeke alone.

Dallas also said no trade unless it was a 3rd anyway.

If we had made the trade, we probably would have ended up with Floyd and Lynch and possibly Smith (if we had enough ammunition to trade up again). If not Smith, we might have still got Collins in the third (if we were able to convince Seattle to take the two fourths), although I'm not sure we would have taken him after taking Floyd. Maybe we try to trade down, recoup some picks and take Prosise.

I think we would have missed out on Elliott and Ramsey since no one was interested in Tunsil at that point because of the video.

After reading about Lynch and the Monday Morning QB piece, if you love a guy that much, the way Dallas loved Lynch, they should've pulled the trigger for him. Especially if they had him rated right next to Goff and Wentz. That means we came up with a top-tier QB and a top 5 pick in the same draft, something the Rams and Eagles couldn't say. Hopefully Lynch is a bust because or Smith turns out to be one of the most special linebackers in the game, otherwise Cowboys nation will look back at the 2016 draft for many years to come. That if we don't find a good QB soon because it is the most difficult thing to do in all of sports; finding an above average quarterback as an NFL team.

Well, I think even the most optimistic see Lynch as a prospect who will take a couple years before he even begins to shape into starting material, maybe in the next year's drafts we may find someone who is more ready to play. Either that or when Romo gets ready to retire we can trade our next three drafts for one like the Eagles and Rams did.

Other than great physical tools, the two paraphrased words I most read and heard associated with Lynch: immature and stupid.

I'm glad Dallas didn't give away the 2nd and 3rd round for that.

Jaylon Smith has a much higher chance to pay off than Lynch does. But desperation dictates.

And Houston is all fired up about Osweiler? Denver needs a quarterback just as badly, and let him walk. That would concern me as a Texans fan.

Let's get this straight, because Jaylon was the best player in College pre-injury. BAR NONE

As much as we don't know about Jaylon Smith medically speaking, there is even more we don't know about QBs developmentally.

I wanted Lynch ahead of Wentz, but you go with Smith over the QB if he can get healthy. Especially with a Top 10 QB already on the roster and ready to go.

Over time, Dak will prove to have been a much better option over Lynch or clipboard holder Cook.

exactly, its like that deal or no deal show where the contestant finally says "deal" then for fun Howie asks the contestant to pick a case then shows what the banker would of offered and on and on all the while everyone's mouth drops because of what could be.... but you know what, when the pressure is on, would they REAAALLLY of picked that case and so on.....

Same here, we thought Baltimore would take Ramsey, but in reality Elliot would be there for the taking so you never know....... besides someone could of very well traded up with balt or Jacksonville knowing we traded down to get elliot at better price. Jerry & Co did the right thing by staying at 4 and grabbing Elliot

IMO At a minimum he's got to represent an upgrade at backup QB over the trash we were running out there last year no?

I agree on the not serious attitude that Lynch shows. I thought Goff and Wentz carried themselves more professionally then Lynch. I'm happy with our draft...

It wasn't worth losing EE for a 4th(or 3rd)
Lynch was not worth trading up for.......period
JSmith is like trading our 34th for a CLEs 2017 1st round pick

Dak will be a steal as a late 4th...as good as Lynch
Tapper and Collins are legit Rushmen
Brown may help...4.35 can't be taught

Frazier, Jackson and Rico are scratch-offs and why comp picks are over-rated

I believe not being able to get Lynch was a huge mistake on Jerry's part. Evidently he did too.

Dak may make up for it, but as it stands today, I believe Lynch will be a stud.

Sorry, I don't buy that.

The Cowboys spent a lot of time with Lynch, working him out. talking to him, etc. If Jerry thought he was immature and stupid, there is no way he would have tried as hard as he did to get him.
