Jared Allen bows out with Seattle and somehow Jerry signs him

Let's say both Donald and Jerrnigan are gone at 16.

Dallas takes Martin the guard/tackle.
Terrance Brooks, S, Florida in the second.
Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise
Chris Smith, DE, Ark
then BPA the rest of the way with maybe a WR, RB LB or two.

Could this defense be beefed up enough to hold teams to under 16 PPG?

If so, and with the offense scoring an average well above that...can this team turn it around and get to the NFC Championship game?

I have no idea, but so much of what is being discussed is worn out now.

I don't see how this defense turns around enough to much noise.

Melton would have to play at an all pro level. Selvie would have to show improvement. We'd have to strike gold in our draft picks on the DL. At least one of Bass/Crawford would need to show something.

Add to that Carter getting his head removed from his ***, Lee not being a vajayjay and the CBs/S playing better....

Then, yeah, we have a shot.

Like the Martin pick a lot... but the answer is no....there won't be enough Defense.

Need to hit on a Rush Lineman to compliment Melton or he'll get doubled and tripled all year.

Counting on 3rd - 5th tier DLs is a risk, though they could hit.

Unless the the no pass int. within 1 yard passes....lol

I don't think 16 points a game is a realistic goal. I think what we should shoot for is to make a few more timely stops than we did last year and win 2-3 more games.

That would be a heck of a draft, but I would add QB in 5th Smith, Murray or maybe Fales. 7th I would go WR, RB, LB, but everything else looks great.

That doesn't include potential comp picks which could be 3 more, heard one could be a 6th other two 7th. Have you heard anything on projected comp picks?

I like your what-ifs sans the safety. Trenches, trenches and more trenches!

If we signed Allen and drafted a Safety round one, DL round two...We'd be 100X better than we were last year.

I've thought about this. I think it's possible. Last year was a perfect storm of crap. We had a new DC that has possibly had the game pass him by. We were changing from a 34 to a 43. Then we had a devastating spate of injuries on the DL that really hamstrung the season.

I believe we will be improved a great deal by what we've done already. Now, I'm not saying we will be a top ten defense...or even in the upper half. But we will be improved.

I've seen people say that we've only replaced Hatcher with Melton and Ware with Mincey...but that is so short-sighted. We've also replaced all those taxi driver/grocery clerk DL with players that have more potential (McClain, Bass, and Crawford). Say what you want, but our staff doesn't have a poor record when it comes to being excited about players. They were right about Austin, Free, Leary, Bernardeau, Hatcher, Lee, and numerous others. When our staff gets excited about players they've seen in our camps, they are usually right. That gives me hope about Crawford and Bass. Can't say the same about McClain....we will see.

Now, if we can add Allen and a couple of pass rushing prospects in the draft, I will feel very comfortable of us having a stout defense....especially with Marinelli in charge.

I also like our chances to compete for a title. Our offense is there, IMO.

Just a small correction. They weren't really right about Austin. After his record breaking day in Kansas City and his subsequent monster deal, he failed to record 80 yards receiving in any game for the Cowboys after that (according to Gil Brandt). Austin made some great plays but was hardly ever a guy that was worth the "excitement". Solid dude and contributed well for an UDFA but the legend of Austin is much bigger than the reality.

Miles signed the extension on 9/9/2010 and caught 10 passes for 146 yds. against the Skins on 9/12/2010. The following game, on 9/19/2010, he had 10 catches for 142 yds. against da Bears.

He had 90 yds. receiving in the first game of 2011. Sounds like Gil got his wires crossed.

No, they were right about him. Injuries derailed his career...the talent was there. He had some big time yardage games and TD games after the KC game. But not after the contract (I think that's what you mean). He was not worth the huge contract....but he was a very good player for us.

Better take some rangy linebackers like the Florida St kids or Shazier too because one of them is gonna have to run with McCoy & Sproles

I too am optimistic about the improvement of the D. A lot of zoners are blasting Carr. We picked him up ( along with drafting Claiborne) as press cover corners but last year we played them in zone. I see Carr as having a very nice bounce back year. Hopefully Claiborne can stay healthy to man the other side and show something. As for the backers, I'm looking for to the growth of Hollowmon (sp), I am a Carter fan and believe that like other's on the D the change was just a little more difficult to grasp then they thought, Some have suggest that maybe Lee needs to play outside. It's a thought!!! The safeties need help. Drafting a viable player is a must to go with Church. I believe we wasted money on Heath & Johnson. Wilcox will turn the corner and make drastic strides. Bank on that! I feel some have been real hard on Hayden. No I do not see him as a permanent starter but I see him a strong rotational player that will give you good minutes at the 1 tech position. I love his motor. Selvie is not the flashy big name DE that we are so use to around the Dallas DE (Harvey Martin, Charles Haley, Ware to name a few) but he's solid and will only get better. That is not to say we do not need to draft quality DE if available, but to say the sky is not falling. With all that said, no I am not saying we are a top ten defense but you have start improving somewhere. Lastly, the are crowning Marinelli the DL Guru, then I say make him earn his pay.
Just my two cents.
