A thought of helping our running woes?

First I will admit that I'm no expert football coach.... buuuuuut... I had a thought about the running game.

Is it feasible to run a 6 man line with an additional TE to the weakside, kind of a Jumbo package? If they didn't adjust with an additional Dlineman we would have 7 big bodies on 4 and if they did put more d lineman in the game then our TE and RB could shoot down the seams with the wr's with nobody to double anyone. I know that there are smart minds out there that can probably shoot all kinds of holes in this but without being nasty, please, could you guys give your thoughts?

An unbalanced line would be a concept that opponents would not be expecting. But that would require commitment to the run and effort, something we apparently do not believe in.

Having extra blockers are nice but it doesn't matter if players can't execute or have shoddy scheme, combination of those two traits are the reason Cowboys rushing offense is near bottom feeders.

Isnt that the 12 personnel package everyone was talking about in the offseason? Same concept? Two sometimes three tight ends on the field at the same time.

I havent even seen Escobar on the field the last two games.

Ok.. I get all that. But I was talking even heavier than the 12 package.. I was thinking 300+ lb maulers on the line.

Right... the "unbalanced" line is what youre talking about, if i understand correctly. It works great whrn you are determined to run it down the opponents throat. And if used well, in no huddle situations, you could even force a timeout, or eventually have a breakout run.

some of the things preventing us from doing this are:

Depth. Your 6th lineman has to be at least as good if not better than their best run blocking linebacker (assuming thats who he would be attempting to block. With waters out, our 6th best lineman would be..... Parnell? Hardly a road grader.

Coaching: the coaches would have to place a premium on rushing, something Garrett has never shown. a 6th lineman is essentially telling the defense that you are committed to running the ball no matter what. Something we rarely, if ever have had the inclination to do in the past.

And finally, defense: the defense would see it coming. Especially if the 6 lineman lines up as an eligible wide reciever (which must be declared by the coach). The defense would probably respond with a 5 lineman look, or.maybe even a 4-4 look, depending on their coaching and personnel.

It is our technique. We get holes open but the line cannot for some reason sustain their blocks and someone comes in slams the hole shut usually with the RB in the whole. I really believe this line would be better served running a MBS instead of the ZBS, yes Free will struggle but right now he is struggling with run blocking. 4 of our 5 lineman are maulers not quick small line man. OF this all MHO.

Dallas needs the type of back that can "get skinny". They don't have the line for a down hill runner. Speed and quickness. JMO, of course.

Thanks for your input folks.. I watched the Miami game last nite and they seemed to run it with pretty good effectiveness.

And they could not run it the previous week because they abandoned it. Running the football consistently requires dedication, commitment and patience. That is not something Garrett has a lot with regards to that aspect of an offense. When you change your focus from week to week depending on the opponent or respond in knee jerk manner to criticism, you are going to have a lack of consistency.

Sigh.... so true. I know this is a passing league but sometimes you have to be able to run it to give your defense a rest and to control the clock. I hope we figure this out so I can see another superbowl before I die.

They could just replace TE Hanna with the OT Parnell. Hanna blocks on most of his snaps and only runs 2 or 3 short pass routes per game. They actually had Parnell run a short pass route 1 time last season.

I'm not a big fan of having Witten and/or Hanna in tight to the line on running plays. It just brings and extra defender into the area. The Cowboys have had the best success running the ball from the 3 WR package this season.

A big problem with the running game, especially against the Lions, is that the Lions were visibly keying on run/pass based on Romo being in shotgun or under center. If he was under Center they played run and at times would abandon coverage before the ball was even out of Romo's hands on the hand-off. If Romo was in shotgun, then the Lions played pass first. The Cowboys obliged them by rarely passing when Romo was under Center. When they did pass from this formation all of the receivers were running short pass routes. The 1 time that I saw a receiver run a deep route with Romo starting from under center, T.Will was open for a long pass and probably TD, but the defender tripped him. The refs considered it incidental contact and didn't call a penalty.

They also had a couple of running plays where they had Dwayne Harris motion to a spot at the end of the line. I hate this play because if just brings an extra defender into the area.
