Just saw on ESPN during their Patriot worship. They looked back at the '72 Dolphins in the AFC title game and they beat the Steelers IN Pittsburgh. How is it that an undefeated team did not have home field advantage?

Championship games used to be played on a rotating basis based on divisions. One year it would be for whatever the East was then, the Central the next, etc.

Same thing happened to Dallas in 1968.

We were 12-2. Cleveland was 10-4. We played them in Cleveland and lost 20-31.

Probably the most convuluted formula I can think of. Worse than baseball's idea to give HFA in the World series to the league that wins the all-star game.

I believe it changed when they expanded the playoffs to five teams in 1978.

They went to 6 in 1990

They changed it in 1975. The last season they used the Convoluted Crap system (tm) was 1974.

Three division winners, two wild cards. The two wild cards played each other the first week. The winner of that game played the #1 seed and the two and three seed division winners played each other.

Unless of course, the wildcard winner was from the same division as the #1 seed. In which case they played the # 2 seed.

still convoluted.

The Giants are only the second NFC team to go to the Super Bowl as a Wild Card (Dallas 1975- 4th seed). The Giants are the lowest seed to go from the NFC (#5). The 2007 Giants (10-6), the 1988 49ers (10-6) and the 1979 Rams (9-7) have the worst records of an NFC Champion since the 1978 16-game expansion.

Carolina, 2003. I know they did not have a wild card berth per se, but they still needed to win three games to get there.

Well, they played a wild card game but they were the NFC South Champions. They were the 3 seed we were the 6 seed and they schooled us bad, then they won that classic two-OT game at St. Louis, smashed Philly and then got held on every play against the Pats*

True, they and the Giants are the only ones in the NFC to do that.

Yeah and their STUPID kicker kicked the last kickoff out of bounds which set the Pats right up at the 40 to go kick the GW FG!
