About Wade Phillips and Penalties

I realize everyone has gone over his defenses with a fine tooth comb.

But what about his overall management?

There was an important point brought up in the press conference today about penalties.

Does anyone know how he did in his previous stops as a head coach?

I don't remember... but I do remember his defense making some pretty dumb penalties in last year's playoff loss to New England.

That really wouldn't be fair to put on Phillips though, because Schotty was the head guy... not him.

Not that I know about his history, but it's a very relevant question IMO. I've been having a little fear that we might run into some dumb penalties, because, of what we've heard from TC so far and the way he's showing the guys to push back the linemen ect.. But then again I think we had waaay to many defensive penalties last season, so I hardly expects it to get worse

I didn't recall an inordinate amount of defensive penalties last year. Offensive ones are aggravating, but I don't know where we ranked in terms of the league as a whole.

Just looked it up...

Last year, we had the 13th most total penalties (100) and were tied for 5th most penalty yards (939). Philadelphia led the league in penalty yards (983).

In '05, we tied for 25th most total penalties with 99 (shows you how much penalties as a whole went down in '06) and were 30th in penalty yards with just 739.

In '04, we had the 24th most total penalties (105) and the 23rd most penalty yards (867).

In '03, we tied for 21st most total penalties (98) and had the 20th most penalty yards (837).


So penalties were only an issue in 2006. Every other year he was here, Parcells did a pretty good job of minimizing penalties.

But perhaps the meteoric rise up the penalty charts in '06 suggests that it was time for him to step down.

I was just thinking the same thing. I remember thinking when Parcells took over that it was going to be nice not having so many penalties because he had a reputation of having some of the least penalized teams in the league. Yet the whole time he was here, I was always thinking, "Gee, when is that ever going to start being the case for our team."

I won't argue with Nav's numbers, but it didn't seem like it was just last season. Maybe it was because the majority of the ones we did get were backbreakers.

some times common perception is wrong. We were way down in penalties the first 3 years- last year we really did badly.
