This surpises me...I think the world of Phillip Rivers and wouldn't have made this trade...but Martys logic often surprises me.

JETS AND CHARGERS TO ANNOUNCE BLOCKBUSTER

DE-Abraham To San Diego - QB-Rivers To New York

The DinoCosta Show has learned through an exclusive source that the NY Jets & San Diego Chargers are set to make a Blockbuster trade.

The Chargers will send quarterback Philip Rivers, the 4th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, to the Jets, in return for pass rushing defensive end John Abraham. Rivers has been stuck behind Chargers quarterback Drew Brees the last two seasons, and will be re-uniting with former Chargers asst. Brian Schottenheimer who was recently named the Jets offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer is planning to install an offensive system that is similar in design to the Chargers current system - a system that Rivers is comfortable in and familiar with. Abraham has been miffed that the Jets haven't given him a new contract after proving that he could play an entire 16 game schedule as he did last year. The Chargers will slide Abraham nicely into their 3-4 defense that will also feature Shawne Merriman, providing San Diego with a terrific twosome that will give the rest of the AFC West fits. This trade makes sense for both teams and makes the Chargers "quiet" signing of quarterback A.J. Feeley last season something that was apparently done with the long term in mind. A big question for the Jets is what will they do with current quarterback Chad Pennington...should he be successful in returning from major shoulder surgery for a second time.

wow.

what are they going to do with Foley? If they cut him he's a great pickup.

Trade Rivers when you don't know if Brees will be the same after shoulder surgery?

How does a guy that covers the Broncos have so many good sources inside the Chargers/Jets camp?

This is nothing new.

It has been making the rumor mill run ever since Schottenheimer took over in New York. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Good question, but I don't think he'd report this so strongly if it was just a rumor. He'd look like a fool.

We'll have to wait to see what happens. I won't believe it 100% until its a done deal either.

Wow...this seems like a good deal for both teams, however, what about Brees? Last I read he would not be ready for training camp?

Yeah.....like I thought...he's a hack.

From January 2, 2006

The Dino Costa Show has learned through an anonymous source that current Dallas Coach Bill Parcells may be interested in returning to New York with the Jets if Herman Edwards takes the head coaching position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to the source, Parcells would only be interested in the Jets general manager position and would hire the next Jets coach to replace Edwards. This has been a trying year for Parcells both with his football team and on a personal front with the death of his brother earlier in the year. Parcells could be lured back to New York if given fill control of football operations by Jets owner Woody Johnson. Either way Parcells is not expected to return to Dallas next season. Edwards is increasingly coming under media scrutiny in New York for the first time in his tenure as Jets coach. The feeling is that Edwards may have coached his last game with the Jets today - and that Parcells would be more than interested in a second Jets act.

True, and the Chicago Daily Tribune didn't have looking a fool high on their list when they decided to run "Dewey defeats Truman".

Notice the clever wording.

"May be interested". Well, I am sure he may have been interested in a job in his backyard. That didn't mean it was going to occur.

This particular rumor with Rivers and Abraham is much more definitive. This source is going to look pretty ridiculous if it doesn't pan out.

And one more thing: this source sounds very much like what was quoted here:

If the Jets slap Abraham with the franchise tag, they may try to trade him and one destination could be San Diego in a deal for quarterback Philip Rivers, especially with former Chargers quarterback coach Brian Schottenheimer having been hired as the Jets new offensive coordinator.

Yeah, "Exclusive Source" is going to have to answer for his baloney rumor! (Exclusive source is code for "I made this up the other night with a bottle of Jack and a Zippo lighter.")

Well I don't know if its speculation or not.

But its not absurd to think that Brees could be checked out thoroughly with a strong prognosis for full recovery.

Personally I hope the deal goes through simply because it'd be fun to see the kind of havoc SD's D could create with another significant playmaker.

And how bout the irony of having both Rivers & Eli in NY? How fun would that be?

I guess they would move Merriman to a rover spot and let Phillips and Abraham be the outside guys. Merriman reminds me so much of a young Wilbur Marshall.

I wonder if this is Martys way of making amends to Drew Brees for his asinine decision to keep Brees in for the last regular season game even though SD was eliminated from the playoffs.

Plus, we don't have to play the AFC West next year. NFC West gets that task, and I don't have animosity for the Seahawks, but playoff positioning is important and I'm much happier to be playing AFC South teams then AFC West...particularly if TO goes to Denver.

I really dont think they make that trade, they have no idea how Brees is going to respond next year, so why trade a very good replacement. I just dont think that makes sense. The Jets can move down and get a QB to sit behind Pennington, since they have alot of money tied up into him.
