Owens incident classified as accidental overdose

04:59 PM CDT on Thursday, September 28, 2006

By REBECCA LOPEZ / WFAA-TV

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said while he stands by the original police report, the Dallas Police Department has officially classified the Terrell Owens incident as an accidental overdose.

News 8 has learned that the publicist for Dallas Cowboys star receiver Owens sounded excited and nervous during a 911 emergency call she placed from Owens' Dallas residence on Tuesday night.

According to a source who has heard the recording, Kim Etheredge told dispatchers she needed an ambulance right away. When a dispatcher asked about the problem, she reportedly said, "a guy took some pills," but did not identify Owens by name.

The incident was characterized in a police report obtained by News 8 as a suicide attempt, and a source said it was dispatched as a "signal 34," which alerts officers to an attempted suicide.

Owens spent the night at Baylor University Medical Center and was released Wednesday morning.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Owens flatly denied that he attempted to take his own life.

The source told News 8 that on the 911 recording, about one minute long, Etheredge calls for an ambulance and asks dispatchers what to do.

She does not mention the word "suicide" in the 911 call, the source says.

Owens—who broke his hand in a Sept. 17 game with the Commanders—was practicing with the Cowboys on Thursday morning. It is not yet clear whether he will play in Sunday's game at Tennessee.

"I've listened to all this stuff, and the situation now is that I have to now—as a coach—rely on other people to keep me informed as to really what's going on," head coach Bill Parcells told reporters Thursday afternoon. "I can't form my own independent opinions other than those involving: Is his hand functional and does he look like he can play on Sunday?"

Parcells said he had a "brief conversation" with Owens Thursday morning. He said he did not feel the team has been distracted by all the media hoopla.

Parcells said he didn't learn about the incident that sent Owens to the hospital until after he got to work on Wednesday morning.

"I was sleeping when all this happened," he said. "Maybe they didn't want to wake me up."

Overdose simply means taking more than the prescribed amount. For example, I told my doctor that I was taking 4 Ibuprofen every 4 hours for my back and he said "you are taking an overdose." True, that is more than it says to take on the bottle.

Wow! It was an accident - just like everyone said. So put away all of the stories about how TO was depressed, crazy, or has a mental illness. You don't need them anymore, media. The man was involved in a weird accident.

I was referring to this:

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas police have classified Terrell Owens' case as an "accidental overdose," not an attempted suicide, closing their investigation Thursday of the Cowboys receiver's hospitalization.

Dallas police chief David Kunkle said he has "great confidence in the original officer report," which said rescue workers were called to the scene because of an attempted "suicide by prescription pain medication." The police document also said a friend described Owens as being depressed and that Owens said "Yes" when asked whether he was trying to harm himself.

"The report in my opinion reflects what the officers were told and represents their best interpretation of what happened," Kunkle said at a news conference Thursday. "But that doesn't mean it's the definitive account of the incident. Like all these situations, we're dealing with incomplete information and facts that change."

Owens said Wednesday he mistakenly mixed the painkillers for a broken hand with supplements he ordinarily takes, causing him to become groggy while at home Tuesday evening. His publicist, Kim Etheredge, was with him and didn't like what she saw, especially when she also discovered an empty bottle of pills. She called 911, and Owens was taken by ambulance to an emergency room.

Within two hours of his hospital release Wednesday morning, Owens was catching passes at team headquarters. He went through a full practice Thursday, his first since breaking his right hand on Sept. 17, and might play Sunday in Tennessee.

At a news conference Wednesday, Owens denied the strongest parts of the police report, which was obtained by media outlets before most details were blacked out in the formal release. Etheredge lashed out at authorities, saying, "I am just upset that I just feel they take advantage of Terrell. Had this been someone else, this may not have happened."

Earlier Thursday, the president of the Dallas Police Association, which represents Dallas police officers, demanded an apology from T.O. and his publicist.

"The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," Senior Cpl. Glenn White said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

Kunkle said at his news conference that Owens and Etheredge were welcome to file a report against the officers if they believe anyone acted inappropriately.

"There's no reason for the officers to do anything inappropriate," he added.

Etheredge could not immediately be reached for a response. The voice mail on her cell phone was full, and she did not respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

per ESPN. that was part of the response to TO and Ethridge's press conference.

But if I understand correct this was from the president of the Dallas Police Association, not the Dallas Police Department.

Either way, it is very unprofessional. The lack of professionalism displayed by the media and the police is rather disturbing IMO.

:lmao: :lmao2:

Now that was a controlled response, lol. Whether it was at the scene or on the 911 tape, she lied to America in that press conference for TO.

Ride or Die.

What's her cell phone number?! :shades:

The media does tend to overdo it however, without the media we would not have daily press conferences, televised football games, HDTV, or internet message boards. We may not like to admit it but they're giving us exactly what we want, imagine the chaos if we did not have up to the second updates yesterday? All of our fandom would have been in upheaval, constantly clicking "refresh" without any new threads!

the dpd is trying to cover there *** cause the know they *** up

What did they **? They responded to a call that was desribed to them as a possible suicide attempt and they put that in their report.

You are as bad as the media if you took what was merely an initial report of the responding officers as if it was the final conclusions of a full investigation.
