Emmitt was obviously talented, but I'm just saying talent wasn't the reason he got that record. His longevity and running behind that OL had A LOT to do with it. Its a testament to Emmitt's desire and attitude that he got that record because there have been other backs that were more talented, but he's the leading rusher.

Talent is a major reason he has the record. Emmitt has always had talent from high school where he broke rushing records to college to the NFL. You don't break a record like this without having exceptional talent. Mentioning the tired 'OL had a LOT to do with it'' is so lame and overused. Emmitt had more to do with the OL's success than the other way around. Who, where, what were those guys before Emmitt played for the Cowboys. They certainly weren't highly regarded and making Pro bowls. The running backs before Emmitt weren't leading the league in rushing with some of those OL blocking for those backs. Emmitt and OL worked hand in hand but to say his success had a LOT to do with the OL is incorrect. They were nothing before Emmitt got there.

Better him than anyone else. AP grew up a die hard Cowboys fan.

I agree- Emmitt is my boy, but if anyone could do it and deserves to do it, its AP. Before last year, I thought Emmitt's record was good forever but I wouldn't bet against this generations Jim Brown when he says he is going to do something.

Except for LA. But then again, Emmitt had 3 consecutive rushing titles before LA played a down in the NFL.

Lots of people think Emmitt holds the record only because he stuck around a long time to pad his totals. But he is second all-time in rushing yards through age 27 -- just 12 yards behind Barry Sanders.

Peterson, who turned 28 this offseason, ranks only eighth in yards through age 27 -- behind Sanders, Emmitt, Payton, Jim Brown, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Along with being second all-time in yards through age 27, Emmitt is BY FAR No. 1 in yards after age 27, with 8,195. Nobody else is within even 1,000 yards of him. To break Emmitt's career record, Peterson will not only have to break Emmitt's record for yards after age 27, he'll have to smash it by more than 1,300 yards -- almost 2,400 more than No. 2 all-time.

Good luck with that.

I've said all along, for someone to break Emmitt's record, they'll have to at least come close to (or surpass) Emmitt's production at younger ages, because that's the easier part of it. Peterson hasn't come close to matching Emmitt's production through age 27 (he's 1,311 yards behind), which will make breaking his career record virtually impossible.
