First, put my in the column with those who loved the draft, for the most part. People can argue any specific actual choice, but I'm mainly interested in whether there seemed to be good rationale used for making the choices they did. I like the gamble on Jaylon Smith mainly b/c he is such an elite talent and b/c, as others do, it makes sense to trust in our/his surgeon's inclinations.
But.
So, out of the gate we face NYG, WAS, CHI and SF, and at DE it sounds like we've got a flex-DT who just had surgery starting on one side of the D-line, and then our best option on the other side appears to be one of (a) an outside LB who coaches moved out of DE, (b) a newly-signed free agent who only registered 2 sacks and 23 tackles in 3 starts in 2 years in OAK, (c) a 4th round pick DE, a round of the draft which one writer noted has almost never yielded a rookie worthy of starting in Big D, and (d) a 5th round pick from last year who is coming off of IR.
Kept thinking there had to be... just had to be... some trade for a veteran DE in the works during the draft given the timing of Jerrah's announcement that Hardy and Mincey are definitely off the radar... but of course, we now know better.
So, sure, plenty of time to do something, but at the moment, hard to figure what that might be.
Thoughts immediately go to who might be a post June 1 cut candidate on another team, but several minutes of googling, on my part anyway, hasn't produced any ideas.
Interested in what others are seeing or have read that might shed some light.
Only thing I'm seeing at all is that MIA had been wanting Cameron Wake to take a pay cut for this last year of his contract, but he doesn't appear to be budging. He has little motivation to do so, since cutting him would leave them with a hole. Granted, given his injury last season (achilles), the team has already let it be known they're planning on playing him more as a situational pass rusher this season, so it's not as large a hole to fill. Monkey wrench could be a 1st rounder DE they drafted in 2013, Dion Jordan, who was out on a drug suspension this past year and reportedly the team would welcome back if he gets allowed back by the Goodell.
Would we maybe look to make a trade there? I don't see it. His contract is $9m+.
And even assuming Jordan came back, would MIA release Wake, or would it just mean that Wake caves to the pay cut they want him to take?
Is Wake even ideal? No, not ideal. Achilles injuries can slow athletes down. The guy is 34 already. He's been playing on the left side all his career. A lot of reasons not to pursue him even if he became available.
I'd just like to see us gain some veteran with some decent number of starts under his belt to add to the mix, and I figure I'm not alone.
