How do we know Johnson is horrible in coverage, lol, he's played like two preseason snaps. The one snap I saw him play he showed good speed and took a correct angle before getting hurt.

Snap shot of MJs career so far..lol I hear ya Casmith, so very true.

Personal opinion is Dixon will be Church's backup & will possibly win the position in time & Wilcox will battle our FS with Johnson which could end up being a win by default considering Johnson's fragile body. Wilcox only started maybe half the games last year & he had two INT's. both were negated by penalties of other players but that doesn't dismiss the fact the kid made a play. I have high hopes for all of our current safeties with the exception of Jeff Heath....... I don't like Jeff Heath.

I am re-watching film of Ahmad Dixon, and I am pleasantly surprised. This kid can realistically start this year. Actually very similar player to JJ Wilcox in a lot of ways.

They both play a little reckless, and do not always wrap up. Both play extremely physical, and go for the big hit. Both very raw in coverage, but have a ton of physical upside. They both have very high ceilings. They both get caught flat footed in coverage.

Ahmad Dixon has a lot of experience in coverage where JJ Wilcox didn't. Use to playing against good competition. Dixon struggles reading coverages or keys against the run and the pass. Gets easily fooled by play action and read action type plays. But has outstanding closing speed on the ball, and really good catchup speed. Saw him track down several ball carriers from across the field or behind. Needs the proper coaching, but I really think he is a very solid football player. Makes a lot of plays.

What are your thoughts on this competition for the other starting safety gig? Lets leave Jeff Heath and Matt Johnson out of this :)

Wilcox is a very fluid athlete and is very good in one on one coverage. He was terrific in one on on drills against WRs at the 2013 Senior Bowl.

Wilcox just has to get down the mental part of playing Safety in the NFL.

What he needs are game reps. He shows great instincts like that PD versus Jackson but people don't generally notice him being a tick slow in routes coming into his zone.

The love for the 7th round/comp/udfa picks is getting out of hand. There's going to be a lot of disappointed people when 1/2 of them don't make the roster. I'm pretty sure most of them are already slated to be starters in the very near future according to this board.
Not when the talent and depth on the team is this poor. I hear ya, but these players are actually needed as a result of the lack of talent. Dixon can push two players off the roster (cough).

I meant johnson Is horrible in coverage. I like dixon and he will be the starter at some point this year

I happy we got Dixon in the 7th...good value there.

But it wouldn't surprise me at all if Johnson is better in coverage than both Wilcox and Dixon. Makes no difference though if he can't even make a through a few practices. Next extended injury and that guy is through.

He had a very low completion rate against and had great ball skills.

Matt Johnson is bigger, faster, and much stronger than both Wilcox and Dixon.
He's not early as stiff as Dixon.

Of course, until We see it at this level (and I do think he's capable) it's all means little.

Dixon will make the team as a special teamer and be a back up to church. He's more of a in the box type s.

Concerning the 7th round picks, at least 3 of the 5 make the final 53. Plenty to be excited about.

I agree. Add in a few UDFAs and I think we have 10 good quality rookies make this team (not just guys who make it because we're a bad team). .

I used to think Matt Johnson would start at safety with Church. If he is healthy I still believe he will start this year. Wilcox and Dixon as backups. Not a bad team this year as far as our depth.

Anybody know Church's contract info? I think Dixon will likely be the backup safety special teams Ace this year but after a year or two if he can play at or near Church's level at SS, he could make him expendable.

Ya that was the play he was trying not to get hurt by grabbing and pulling the runner out of bounds as he slid out of bounds
