If you can't win your division, you just aren't good enough. When the Cowboys don't win the NFC East and miss the playoffs, I'll be just fine with it. They'll have had two chances to stop the Eagles. If you can't stop them, good for them.

The NFL wants as many teams in it as possible as late in the season as possible. Having four team divisions with a guaranteed playoff spot for one of them helps achieve this goal.

Unfortunately the league is all about parity, and rules changes to assure more scoring. Once teams do actually improve and become today's form of " dominant" free agency sets in and the cap forces choices to gamble for a championship.

I'm of the mind that simple w-l when it comes to playoffs is the way to go. You can still have your division rival but when it comes to the big games let the best winners have the spots.

Athletes know who is better at something. Today's games is all about revenues , and not who is actually the best.

So do you treat Cardinals games the same as Eagles games? They were division rivals for 31 years until recently. If your answer is no, then in 5 years an Eagles game would be no different than a Jaguars game.

Appreciate your take, but I'm more into if you are better then your w-l will reward you.

Fans align with cities, and to me would still want bragging rights over another city.

The NFL wants " sales & $$$ ".... Getting a losing team into the playoffs just ensures more ticket sales when in fact you can have a factual " losing record " and still claim " winner" as a title......

Shades of the PC world entering sports....

Of course that's what the NFL wants. So why wouldn't they want one more team in the playoffs? They are worried that that extra team would be so bad that the quality of the playoff product would drop and dissuade fans from caring. The NFL playoffs would look like the NBA. I think that was the point Troy was trying to make. The problem with that argument though is that this year a division winner with a woeful record is going to make it, while a team with a record as high as 11-5 could sit at home.

Or words to that effect during yesterday's broadcast. Really Troy? The state of the NFC South this year actually seems like it could be an argument FOR playoff expansion. If you are going to continue to award division winners then maybe an extra spot is called for, especially considering this year when a 7-9 or even 6-10 division winner might leave a 10-6 or 11-5 team (possibly the Cowboys) home for the playoffs. Thoughts?

My argument. Of you can't win division with 8-8. You are penalized out of playoff race. Goes to next team with least better record.

That's sort of what they do now. It's a question of how many teams with the best records do they let in.

Agreed, my post was more to reflect I think winning your division should count for something.

One problem with saying let the teams with the best record in is how do you determine what is the "best record". There would still have to be only a set amount of playoff spots, like we have now, so someone could still get screwed, and someone undeserving could still get in.

they absolutely should NOT expand the playoffs...

HOWEVER, they absolutely SHOULD consider changing the seeding protocol so that a 10-6 wildcard team can be seeded higher than a 7-9 division winner.

if the goal is to make every game count, then they should ACTUALLY make every game count.

Teams get hot in the playoffs. Like the Packers did. And other teams that made it as the wildcard and went on to win it. The NFC South should not have a team in it this year.

Then why not just drop divisions all together and take the teams with the best records

Agree with those that say a minimum of an 8-8 record should be required for a playoff appearance.

divisions create regional rivalies that help promote the sport. they also help ensure that different regions are represented in the playoffs.

I favor an expansion of seven teams per conference and home field solely determined by record. A division winner should make it but not get home field necessarily.

Besides that mean3 wild card games on Saturday and Sunday. That would be awesome.

Current format is fine.

With 32 teams, this divisional format is perfectly balanced. There have always been teams throughout the years that have gone to the playoffs with worse records than teams that are left out; it's just the way it is. If Dallas takes care of their business, then all of this is irrelevant.

I would like to see conditions on getting into the playoffs. If you can't at least be 8-8, you don't get in and the next better team gets in. I am sick of seeing parity taking over. I want to see the best teams get in period. I would even say if I ran the league, top 6 get in regards of division. Come on I don't care about winning the NFC East...I want to get in the playoffs and win the Lombardi trophy.
