Tony should play, if to just prove he won't automatically combust as soon as he steps on the field.....as even some on this board think.

If the team is so unwilling to play him, it sounds like some of them may think the same thing?

I'm wondering if there isn't some level of a financial element to things as there is for the Bills benching of Tyrod Taylor?

I would certainly imagine Romo would prefer to play several series rather than sitting by watching Dak tend to the team's QB duties in the upcoming games. Whether or not he'll be entrusted to lead the team if Dak goes down also remains to be seen, of course.

It's just a guess as to whether it's totally Garrett's say or if Jerry might influence JG to allow Tony to sub for Dak without the benefit of any prior live game action. Of course, Mark Sanchez is an option as well that would allow the team not to risk an injury to Romo before the playoffs get underway. We'll soon see whether that is a consideration or not, as has been stated by way of Jerry recently.

Garrett has also stated publicly that he wants to give the rookies as much game action as possible going through the games before the playoffs. In any event, it'll be interesting to see what decisions are to be made with respect to the QBs when the time comes.

It’s Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman’s opinion that Romo should want to play and get live reps because practice is not the real thing.

If I was in Tony’s position and hadn’t played in so long, I would want live reps
My work filter will not play the embedded video. Did Aikman actually say Romo should want to play in the video or during the radio interview? Or is Hill saying Romo should want to play and he's misquoting Aikman?

Well I personally think they don't want Tony going out there, throwing darts, thus giving the media ammunition to cause more of a controversy.

But its not smart to hold him back cause of what the media and such think, we might need him if something happens to Dak....ala the fibula epidemic going around in the water.

we want the same too, troy.
I would rather Romo stay on the bench. Dak is getting all of the 1st team reps at practice and will probably play at least the 1st quarter. When Dak exits the game then I am sure he will be joined by Dez, Elliott, Witten, Beasley, TWill, and a couple of offensive lineman. I am not sure what we gain by putting Romo in the game (on the road) and watching him get killed by the Philly starting defense. You know Philly is going to play their starters the entire game and try to win this game. We need Romo healthy and we need people to remember how Romo played in the past so hopefully we can convince a team to give us more in a trade. Last thing we need is Romo getting hurt or playing bad so his value drops.

The problem with Tony coming in and playing is it causes the media to go nuts and cause a stir and I don't think the team wants to deal with that right now. So you keep Tony out of the picture unless absolutely needed... and right now he isn't. The negative is if Dak gets hurt and Tony doesn't have any live action. But you can't assume Dak will get hurt.

So I agree with not playing Tony.

ROMO’S SWAN SONG IN DALLAS
Discussing the Cowboys’ future at back-up QB must begin with Tony Romo.

Just to clarify, Dallas will not risk his playoff health against the Eagles.

Despite mixed emotions, it’s a near certainty Romo will play elsewhere in 2017.

Regardless of trade, release, or retiring, $19.6 million in already paid bonus money will flood the Cowboys’ 2017 salary cap.

However, Romo’s $14 mil base (and future base salaries) will leave the books.

The salary cap cost of keeping him another season was set to total $24.7 mil.

Romo’s exit will ultimately save the Cowboys $5.1 mil in 2017 ($24.7 – $19.6).

Tony will always be appreciated in Dallas, but cap maximization is crucial to winning.

While he’ll leave with all our best wishes, business is business and life moves on.

Romo needs to not only work off some rust but the anxiety he's bound to feel facing a pass rush for the first time since August. He's bound to feel some apprehension with all the injuries he's suffered, he needs to try and get over some of that. He'll look like a deer in the headlights if his first live game action comes in the playoffs having to step in if Dak goes down. He'll be facing a playoff team with their season on the line which will be a lot different than the last time he faced a pass rush in preseason. Nothing but bad things will happen if he's forced into action during the playoffs if he's not given at least a couple of series on Sunday to get a feel for live game action again. He hasn't played a regular season game since his meltdown vs Carolina last year.

The last time I checked, the media doesn't suit up and take the field--the back-up QB might have to. Can't play scared of the media. That's not winning football....

It's extremely likely that Tony has taken his last snap for the Cowboys barring an injury to Dak. The Cowboys are trying to protect Tony's trade value by not having him go out and struggle or get injured. That makes sense, although it places all their eggs in the basket that Dak stays healthy. It's a gamble either way.

Preparing for a playoff run should take precedent over protecting Tony's trade value, in my opinion.

If I were in Tony's situation, I would want live reps as well. If I felt as though I was part of this group that wants to win a Super Bowl, I'd want to be prepared.
