Aikman still concerned about Romo's back

When Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a back injury at the end of the 2013 season, former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said Romo’s bad back should concern the Cowboys. From all indications, Romo has made good progress in recovery. But Aikman remains concerned anyway.
Aikman told the Cowboys’ website that he doesn’t think a quarterback really knows if his back is strong enough to withstand the pounding of playing in the NFL until the season starts. Aikman knows that first hand, having had back surgery in his own NFL career.
“I came back in a relatively short period of time because of when I had my surgery, so he’s at least afforded more time to get ready,” Aikman said. “But having said that, two back surgeries in less than a year at his age, I would be a bit concerned. I’m hopeful that he’s able to come back – everybody is. This team won’t be the same if he’s not able to. I anticipate that he will come back. But to say that, ‘Hey, he’s ahead of schedule and everything’s going fine,’ I’m not sure how you can really measure that here in April.”
Aikman retired when he was 34, and Romo will turn 34 on Monday. Aikman has said his back injury played a significant role in forcing him to retire. The Cowboys still hope Romo has several good years left in him. But it’s easy to see why Aikman wonders just how healthy a 34-year-old quarterback coming off two back surgeries will be.

Before people start over-reacting, PFT is not the source. The commentary was originally in an article at the official site.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Troy Aikman doesn’t know specifically where Tony Romo’s at with his recovery, but he does know a thing or two about returning from a back injury to play quarterback in the NFL.

Aikman had back surgery early in his career and experienced back issues prior to his retirement, and he said the back surgeries Romo’s experienced are nothing to take lightly.

“I came back in a relatively short period of time because of when I had my surgery, so he’s at least afforded more time to get ready,” Aikman said while at a United Way celebration announcement Wednesday at AT&T Stadium. “But having said that, two back surgeries in less than a year at his age, I would be a bit concerned.

“I’m hopeful that he’s able to come back – everybody is. This team won’t be the same if he’s not able to. I anticipate that he will come back. But to say that, ‘Hey, he’s ahead of schedule and everything’s going fine,’ I’m not sure how you can really measure that here in April.”

I haven't been so disappointed about an upcoming season since 88'. Really, Romo's bad back is a concern. Talk all you want about back surgerys and todays medicine, it still won't make Romo who he once was.

He's are Danny White 2.0

Instead of being reactionary (see Tony Banks, Clint Stoerner, Ryan Leaf, Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Henson, Drew Bledsoe) Jerry & Co. need to be proactive and draft a QB if the opportunity presents itself.

If Bridgewater, Manziel or even Bortles slides to the 16th selection or possibly very close to it, make the move.

At 16, if the choice is between Shazier, Martin, or even Jernigan and one of the QB's, the pressure will be on.
Or in the alternative, trade down in the 1st round, pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round selection, and take either Tom Savage from Pitt or Zach Mettenberger from LSU.

And yes, you can rebuild with Tony Romo ~ by drafting his successor.

I think it would be great to draft the kid from Est Illinois just for the comparisons to Romo.

Mickey Spagnola always uses Aikman as the example of why Tony will be fine after his back surgery. Now Aikman is saying he had problems with his back later in his career. I guess that kills Mickey's angle now.

I doubt Tony will be able to play the entire season with that back. I think the lack of arm strength will be painfully noticeable early in the season.

It would be beyond fantastic if someone in the Dallas media would do some real investigative reporting. This would be an excellent story. Two Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks. Both players with back issues which required surgery. Both quarterbacks who had or are reaching a crossroad in their careers in their early to mid thirties. How about digging up some info on the particulars of each player's injuries? What surgical techniques were used to treat Aikman and how do they relate to Romo's treatments, if applicable? Or are they dissimilar? What surgical advancements have been made in the decade and a half between Aikman's retirement and Romo's current situation? How have other quarterbacks handled similar surgeries and/or rehab? Etc.

Okay, I'll put the impractical pipe dreams away and wait for the next Dallas media tweet about Jones running his mouth about nothing. And wait for the usual reaction hilarity to ensue.

Same thing about back and then comments about finding someone else.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...cerned--about-tony-romo-s-back-135153156.html

Romo and Aikman have plenty of parallels. Romo is also entering his 12th year, and he'll turn 34 this year, the age Aikman was at retirement. Aikman didn't hint that change was on the way, noting instead that Brandon Weeden and, presumably, Kyle Orton will be suitable backups.

"It doesn’t sound like they’ll be drafting [a quarterback]," Aikman said of the Cowboys. "But if they can find a free agent to come out and at some point down the road play like Tony has played, that’s a pretty good way to go.”

You know where this ought to head, though. Johnny Manziel to the Cowboys. Make it happen, Jerry

that's why Weedin happened - Troy said he hurt his back in the first couple years - if not the first - he always got shots in the back

I don't mean this to come off the wrong way, but why are we supposed to care if Aikman is concerned about it? Everyone has some concern over it. Aikman having it doesn't change or mean anything.

Back injuries have always been and still are prone to reinjury. Anyone who has had back problems in the past knows what the deal is with that. Constant stress caused by athletic activities and the accompanying wear and tear are always threats to reinjure those who have been plagued by back injuries in the past. The back is a delicate, sensitive and vulnerable part of the anatomy. I'm sure Aikman knows firsthand what Romo's injury entails and realizes how vulnerable he is in the performance of his duties.

My understanding is that Romo's back issue is not as serious as Aikman's from a full recovery standpoint, and doesn't have the same prognosis after recovery.

Time will tell.

If the Cowboys are truly concerned about it, they will no doubt draft a quarterback fairly high (which they may do anyway).
