So now the measurement is MVP awards? Well in that case I guess Favre is better than Montana. Or Elway. Or pretty much any QB not named Peyton or Unitas.

"Best player in the NFL" isn't even meaningful unless Favre could dominate in a majority of the other 21 positions in addition to his better than average QB play.

Yeah, because they give MVPs to bad players. Meanwhile Troy is way better than Favre, and those darn MVP voters just can't see it. For 3 years in a row. Right.

You obviously are 10 years old and have no idea how good Favre was in the 90s. His 3 straight MVP seasons were among the best QB seasons in history to that point. Get a clue.

Yeah, because I said Favre was bad and that Aikman was clearly way better.

I think outside of Cowboys fans, Favre would win by a landslide if you put this to a poll.

No comparing Aikman to E-Lie.

Its complete nonsense if you've seen both of them play.

I was comparing their play in their Superbowl runs. Both elevated their games.

Aikman's elevated his stats in his Superbowl runs far beyond his regular season stats.

Eli threw 15 TDs vs only 2 Interceptions in his two Superbowl runs -- much elevating his game over his regular season stats.

Let's set aside career numbers because, to some extent, that's not fair given Favre played so much longer. Instead, let's look at each QB's top 5 seasons. For Aikman this includes '91, '92, '93, '95 and '98. And for Favre, this includes '95, '96, '01, '07 and '09.

For those seasons, here are the stats:

Yards per season:
Aikman - 2,987
Favre - 4,118

Yards per attempt:
Aikman - 7.56
Favre - 7.66

Touchdowns per season:
Aikman - 15.4
Favre - 34

Interceptions per season:
Aikman - 8.4
Favre - 15.4

Passer Rating:
Aikman - 91.6
Favre - 98.5

If you had to choose either QB for their 5 best seasons, which one would you choose?

Favre had 9 seasons of at least 3000 yards and a 90+ passer rating. Aikman had 2 (and only 2 seasons with a 90+ passer rating and only 5 seasons with at least 3000 yards).

There really is no argument that Aikman was better.

The only argument I would put forth is that Aikman elevated his play in big games (playoffs, Superbowls) to much greater extent that Favre did.

I know that's not a very scientific rebuttal, but I think it's worth something.

Fans of any team (to include Dallas) have also thought "anyone" is better than Romo, and that Dallas would be in the basement of the NFL last season. Fan opinion isn't exactly an accurate representation of fact, whether past, present, or future. Favre is arguably better than Aikman by certain metrics, but popularity is a terrible metric for nearly anything other than popularity.

Troy Aikman was a great Dallas Cowboy. Brett Favre is one of the best of all time, top 5 in my book. He had his picks but he also didn't miss a game in almost twenty years. He had one of his best seasons ever at 40 and if not for a bounty on his head probably wins another SB.

If were getting ready to play a football game and were picking teams, you go ahead and take Tom Brady...I'm taking Brett Favre.

Aikman vs. Favre in their primes: We know who Madden likes, but who are you taking and why?

If my team is surrounded by talent... Aikman. If not... Favre.

Aikman was so much more efficient then Favre but Favre is much more of a Playmker then Aikman.

Aikman and Eli Manning are eerily similar when you think about their Superbowl runs.

Eli in 8 games during 2 SB runs
63.12%
7.35 YPA
5.32 TD%
0.71 INT%
100.09 Passer Rating

Troy in 9 games during 3 SB runs
69.72%
8.76 YPA
6.77 TD%
1.59 INT%
112.61 Passer Rating

Aikman never completed less than 60% of his passes in those game and went over 70% 6 times.
Eli completed less than 60% of his passes 3 times and went over 70% 3 times.

Aikman went over 100 in passer rating in 8 of his 9 playoff games. His low was 77.2 when he was playing with a concussion and his high was 144.7

Eli went over 100 in passer rating in 5 of his 8 playoff games. His low was 72.0 and his high was 132.4.

I don't think they are eerily similar runs. Eli's years were very good, but Aikman's are outstanding.

Aikman had 5 years of good play, and 5 years of average to very below average play.

I'm never been on board with Aikman being anything other than a good QB on a great team. The very definition of a "Game manager". He's not a top 15 QB of all time like many claim and he's not one of the worst like countless Cowboys' haters like to make you believe.

After 1995, look at Aikman's weapons in the passing game other than Irvin. It ain't pretty.

Jerry finally addressed it successfully with the signing of Rocket, but that was sadly short lived.

Pop in a tape of Aikman in 1993. You will see how good he really was in his prime when properly supported in the passing game.

His numbers were certainly depressed relative to guys like Young and Favre who threw it substantially more than Dallas did. A lot of that was differences in philosophy though.

If Aikman would have played in an offensive system that featured the passing game, Troy could have shattered records. As many players have said, his accuracy was second to no one. If he played today, he would be thought of as the same quality QB that Brady and P. Manning is. Troy is very underappreciated , even by Cowboy fans. His accuracy was great and Troy had the ability to play his best games when the pressure was at it's highest. I think he was one of the best leaders in team history. I have watched him scold the line, Irvin and even the defense when he needed to.

When discussing QBs that are the best of all time, or a myth says that they were, the excuse that there wasn't enough talent around him is a poor one. Aikman was a good QB elevated by the talent around him. The best QBs elevate the players around them. I give credit to Troy for having a few great playoff runs, but even with great talent around him, he was never anything exceptional at the QB position.

There is nothing wrong with saying Aikman isn't the best of the best or not close, you can still consider him a good QB.
