Akin Ayodele is invisible!

Akin has been invisible, and I think he's a solid player, if we let him walk or replaced him, I wouldn't care either way.

I like Akin and I think he has been solid.. but he did blow his assignment on the long run the other night against the pack.. he took on the blocker with the wrong shoulder allowing him to be sealed.

It wouldn't surprise me given that Ayodele usually only plays 1st and 2nd downs. But I don't think Burnett is good enough on 1st and 2nd downs to get out of the nickel, nor do I think Burnett is all that good in the nickel to begin with.

I wouldn't object to Jerrah going after Lance Briggs this offseason. They have the cap room and he would fit in nicely as a 3-4 ILB since he has the size to take on blockers and is excellent in coverage. That's really one of our big problems in the pass defense, the LB's are pretty much mediocre in pass coverage.

Didn't Briggs just sign an extension with the Bears?

edit- nevermind. that report was just a rumor

Akin is solid but not spectacular. Nothing wrong with that. He plays smart and doesn't mess things up.

On the other hand, he doesn't make any explosive plays and is out of the lineup during a good bit of the plays.

I'm OK with him, but I wouldn't mind having more of an impact guy there.

Here are the RILB of some other 3-4 teams and the stats they have:

Teddy Bruschi, New England - 70 tackles, 2 sacks
David Harris, New York Jets - 91 tackles, 3 sacks
Larry Foote, Pittsburgh - 56 tackles, 3 sacks
Stephen Cooper, San Diego - 83 tackles, 2 sacks
Patrick Willis, San Francisco - 128 tackles, 1 sack

Akin Ayodele, Dallas - 41 tackles, 0 sacks

However, he is splitting time with Burnett, so he has:

Kevin Burnett, Dallas - 45 tackles, 0 sacks

Combined, our RILB's have 86 tackles but no sacks.

I wouldn't mind a little more production out of Ayodele's spot. Next year we might end up with someone who can be a little more active there.

If not though... I'm OK with Akin.

Agree with everything you said here. Big plays are usually made on 3rd down. Thats where all eyes are on Ware and Ellis and the other playmakers on this defense. He comes out in passing situations so he won't be the one making the big plays.

If Burnett were the full-time starter, and he is probably talented enough to do so, he would be worn out on a lot of these third downs. Ayodele has his role as a 1st, 2nd down guy and he fits well in it IMO.

At least Ayodele hasn't been flagged like so many guys on defense. I don't remember one penalty being called on #51.

Burnett has stepped up his game this year and basically made Ayodele a platoon player, which is still a needed role. If Burnett took all the snaps, and especially played obvious running down where he was taking on and shedding blockers, he would be injured by the 3rd quarter.

I hope ESPN extends Emmitt's contract for another five years. It's worth it just for the unintentional comedy. It's not just bad grammar, I literally don't know what the heck he's saying half the time. I don't think anyone does. And then the rest of the crew have to counter his argument, and pretend like they knew what they just said and it just turns into a bad 'Who's Line Is It' sketch. It's the most entertaining thing on any football pregame show.

Heck of a football player, though.

Lance Briggs is out, but I agree with the thought.
Akin made some good plays in the passing game last year. I haven't noticed as many this year, but he's been rotating. James is more of a liability in coverage, though, isn't he?

I do think our ILB pass coverage isn't as good as we would like. Got to think that contributes to the secondary's problems.
