Allen Iverson as a quarterback at Notre Dame and with the Dallas Cowboys? That was his ultimate sports dream, not playing college basketball at Georgetown and eventually becoming one of the most successful guards in NBA history.

"He was a far better football player than a basketball player," Gary Moore, Iverson's mentor and longtime manager, told Bleacher Report in a post published Thursday. "Far, far better. We talked about Notre Dame all the time. That was our dream. We watched the Fighting Irish on TV every Saturday.
"He was never supposed to be in the NBA. We were focused on the NFL. He should be in Canton as we speak."

He was a very good football player.
But that's a really dumb comment to say a cuter Hall of Fame NBA player was really way better at football. Can't stand that kind of exaggeration.

You never know how things would've ultimately worked out, but he was considered by many in Virginia to be a better football player than basketball player at the HS level. Everyone uses Vick as the standard for that era and say Iverson was better. Again, who knows.....

He was just saying in HS he was a better football player than basketball player at the time.

He literally would have had to be one of the best QBs in NFL history to top his hoops skills.
I recall him well inHigh School and read of his exploits a lot in the Virginian Pilot.

He was especially a great kick returner, but also considered a great pass/option QB.

Watching tape looked better in secondary and punt returns.

4 time scoring champ
3 time steals champ
Future HOFer

I think Allen made the right choice

I know OGs from the Hampton area that played against iverson in high school (These were D1 players) and they all say he was better at football, for what it's worth. Obviously basketball turned out great for him.

Yeah, I know has great. I have a relative that played directly against him.
I'm not putting him down.

They played against him in basketball too?

I think without being a great outside shooter, his playmaking on the football field would stand out a ton compared to basketball. That would not mean he was actually WAY better.

I just always get a kick out of people--like his manager in the article--saying in massive hind site that he was WAY better in football.

I mean just 2 years out of high school and he is the very 1st player taken in the NBA draft.

For all we know he may have not have even been a college star in football...let alone a HOFer in the NFL. All speculation.

Iverson would have played under Switzer, Gailey, Campo and Parcells If he had been drafted by Dallas and stayed until 2006. I doubt the Practice/We're talking about practice shtick would have went over well with Parcells. Campo on the other hand...

So, in an alternate universe, AI is drafted by the Boys instead of (?) in 1996 and takes over the starting QB job from Aikman around 1999 after riding pine for a couple of years and concussions or whatever taking their toll on Aikman. AI then goes on to have an electric 3 years for the Boys but then... The infamous "Practice" press conference! LOL, can't leave it out. In my version, this still happens(makes for good tv!).

Enter 2003, Bill Parcells is hired. The media is ablaze with news stories - "How will they co-exist? The answer is they won't. AI is traded or released by the Dallas Cowboys in his prime, Bledsoe signed and one Antonio Romero Romo is signed off the rookie scrap heap. 3 years later, AI is burning up the league continuing his Hall of Fame campaign for another team, and the football gods lay hands on Bledsoe once again benching him in favor of an undrafted fan-fave, in effect ending his career.

There was no saving Bledsoe, in the end.

Pardon my timeline errors, but that was a fun exercise nevertheless.

I'm from Newport News and heard about Bubba Chuck since 1987. Iverson also played Baseball as a kid too. As far as him being a better football player than Basketball I'll say it was about even IMO . His biggest rival in football was Aaron Brooks the former qb for the Saints.

Iverson was the best I've seen in the area but some say Ronald Curry was a better football player than Iverson was and Curry's biggest rival was Mike Vick who clearly took a backseat to Curry back then. It was amazing seeing how much Vick just took off once he went to Va Tech.

Yeah, Curry was really great back then too.

We did not get a 1st rd pick for Al? I was hoping for the 2 1st rd picks in 2003 where we get Newman and another player.

Iverson would have flamed out in the NFL, and I mean that literally.
