Alligator drags child into water at Disney's Grand Floridian, deputies say

Deputies were searching early Wednesday morning for a toddler who was dragged into the water by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Tuesday night, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A report of a 2-year-old child being dragged into the water came in at 9:21 p.m. Tuesday, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva said.

Deputies were searching the Seven Seas Lagoon and put crime-scene tape around area to block it off. Multiple emergency vehicles filled the front drive of the Victorian-style hotel and a helicopter hovered overhead. Reedy Creek Fire Rescue, Orange County and the Florida Fish and Wildlife officials were searching for the child and the alligator.

The child, whose name was not available, has not been found as of 12:30 a.m. A press conference is scheduled for 12:45 a.m.

I heard this on the radio this morning. It's my understanding that the lagoon where the kid was taken was part of the Disney resort, not a public lagoon.

that's correct, it's the lagoon adjacent to the Grand Floridian resort. This lagoon is a subset of a larger body of water, Bay Lake. Alligators are pretty much in every fresh body of water in central and south FL and from what I heard, policy is to remove any greater than 4 ft. This one was reportedly 7+ ft so....... As a parent, wow, couldn't imagine.

Yikes 7 ft+!? They said the kid hasn't been found yet, although it's likely the kid will be found dead, I hope by some miracle he is still alive.

Would I be so bold to expect a lawsuit since having the 7 ft+ gator (knowingly or not) in the resort lagoon is against policy?

I watched a news briefing this morning involving local police and wildlife authorities where there's 50 or so people involved in the search and rescue. At that point, 4 alligators of that size were located and removed, however, none were suspected to be involved so search is on-going. It appears this policy, which I would imagine is very difficult to keep on top of, has gotten away from them. There are signs around the resort saying no one is allowed in the water but nothing, from what I've heard, mentions alligators. I would say lawsuits are a certainty.

The parents struggled with the gator to get their child but it got away........OMG

Wow, makes you wonder if Disney ever tried to control any population of them inside the park, at least trying to use dredging or sonar to check on the lagoon.

I literally almost threw up when I read this.
And sorry, I even got mad at the poster for putting it out there...which is unfair, I know.
As a parent of young child, the reality of that far surpasses any of my very worst nightmares.

Horrible. Someone on my Facebook feed was actually complaining that they were killing the alligators because the parents can't watch their child. Yeah, she's one of these dog weirdos that puts a pic of her dumb dogs every day on there

Now, some are saying that something smells fishy, like the parents drowned him and blamed it on a gator, SMH.

Anyways, accidents happen but in no way, shape or form is my kid in any kind of water around there, especially at night. The 4yr old was 30 yards away in a play-pen on the beach while the 2yr old was a foot into the water?

This is a huge body of water and keeping gators out of it is about impossible. The child is not in any stomach, gators don't do that.....they take prey under water and stash them so they can later eat when it is easy to tear apart.

I can say one thing for sure, if that was my kid, we both come out alive or we both die.......no way I let go of that gator

Gators were put on the protected list some time ago. The problem now is that there is an infestation... ask anyone from Florida. That's why many states have now re-instituted a hunting season on gators to control the numbers...

There is a real issue with them in the Southern states and Texas...

Yeah, they need to liberalize the hunting restrictions on them. They're pretty good to eat. I wouldn't know the first thing about how to skin one though

well like has been said, gators don't eat immediately. my co-worker is well aware of gators and their habits and she told me the same thing about them stashing their (hate to say this) food. i can't imagine if they got the "right" gator, how this child may eventually be found.

I just came back from the Everglades and let me tell you, the thought of this poor child being attacked is chilling to the bone. Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Very very sad.
