Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society and sports

Get off the strip and into the neighborhoods. Life is no different for people. Just like your neighborhood and mine. Grocery stores, car washes, convenient stores, car dealerships.....

You know, the kind of things you won't find on the strip.
Perhaps I wasn't clear. I was describing neighborhoods far from the strip...where people should have normal grocery stores. The Walmarts were closed up and shuttered, as well as most all the grocery stores. All because of despair/poverty/vice driven crime.

Obviously this doesn't describe all of Las Vegas, but it describes a lot of it.

Theoretically I don't disagree with you. I have only been to Las Vegas once, for a business trip, and I found it to be kind of a disgusting place. So I think you and I would agree on most of this stuff but I do differ with you a little bit because it seems like you are assigning responsibility to the activity instead of the person.

Take for example your childhood neighbor. I would expect that gambling was just the medium he chose, but if gambling did not exist he probably would have found some other Vice to devour his passion time and money that should have been focused on his family. Countless families have been torn apart and destroyed by everything from gambling to drugs to alcohol abuse to affairs to online pornography, you name it.

I am not saying any of those things are good things, I am just saying if people made better decisions and displayed more self-restraint none of these things have the ability to destroy lives in and of themselves.

I feel for your neighbors family but the reality is gambling did not destroy that family, their father did. JMHO

I don't mind people gambling in controlled settings. IE Casinos.

I don't care for the overload of commercials and celebrities/TV stations pushing it every commercial break. Look how easy it is to win! Turn 5 into 150! Friends celebrating! Good times!
Reminds me of that south park commercial on drinking.

People have their weaknesses, or guilty pleasures. Some like to drink, bet, shop, etc... Years back you could only shop if you went to the store. Now you can buy anything online and get it to your door next day. You can now bet on sports anywhere.

The will of people IMO is getting lower and lower, I'm guilty of it myself at times, and in todays world it's easy when the world is in your smartphone.

Sports betting should be illegal. Only say that because I use to feel different. I now see it opens up a Pandora's Box of bad things . Like athletes more and more betting for or against teams they are actively playing for. Don't tell me it doesn't happen. It has always. Also, it can destroy lives and create addiction. I don't speak from my own experience but know others that it has affected. Or "infected" like a scourge. We need to have freedom to choose but sports betting is a slippery slope. If anyone has played draft kings your doing it too. I'm just as guilty. Even if you only play the dime games. Have you noticed you almost never win anything of any significance? Lol... That's because the house ALWAYS wins. It's rigged. It's legalized thievery. I no longer participate.
Let the weak die. It's ok.

Sports betting is a terrible thing. The relentless pumping in game is absurd. I get it can be fun but it really hurts some people and has no business being so accessible. It shows how bad these leagues are too. Anything for money and zero cares on the costs.

Weird where I am from there is no guy from Fanduel or Draft Kings with a gun to my head telling me I am required to login and make a bet. What state are you in that you are being forced to do sports betting?

Overindulgence of alcohol is 100 times worse of a disease on our society, and no one seems to care about the constant pushing of drinking.

Gambling tends to only affect the person doing it or they’re close circle. Alcohol, on the other hand, affects completely innocent people countless of times every day.

You should be happy that you are strong, not tempted or addicted to gambling. Sadly there are lots of people that aren't. I am not wishy washy at all and I get the free will thing but making it so easy and pumping it during games is not a good thing. At all.

It's addiction in general. Gambling hurts people same as alcohol. I think it shouldn't be so easy. I definitely think the announcers shouldn't be pumping it.

Agreed.

Hell, around here one of the churches sponsored the beer tent for the 4th of July festivities growing up.

Went back to it right after HS graduation, was served beer as a minor (it’s a small community - they knew who we were and some even watched us graduate). They knew what they were doing. Selling beer to minors to raise money for the church.

Always found it humorous they sponsored it. Went to it again this year for the first time in two decades. Looked like they weren’t sponsoring it any more.

That's a crazy story

Im no pharisee by any stretch but what kind of a church fundraises by selling booze to minors? Almost incomprehensible

When I saw Emmanuel Clase come under fire I knew it had gone too far. Bets on 1st pitch ball or strike? Come

lol, it busted open yesterday. He’s done for. Someone calculated he makes about $2500/pitch legally and just shot his career away for like $12K

If you really want to blame someone blame politicians most of these states and municipalities that have casinos, sports books, etc, prey on the sensibilities of society to fatten their pockets. Most casinos and gambling establishments get passed because all that money is promised for schools, the true suckers are the ones that believed the politicians that pushed it.

American culture is in steady decline. Nothing good ever came from gambling. Plenty of people have destroyed their lives and families through gambling addiction. How clever for legal sports books to make is so ridiculously easy to bet on sports. I just found out today you can get on balls and strikes in MLB. Just ridiculous.

How about the smell of dope everywhere? I am no prude, but geez, I smell the stuff while commuting in my car. We are becoming the zombie apocalypse.

I think you have to understand that mass media and technology have made this more transparent. I would be willing to bet that this stuff happened before, they just didn't get caught. With gambling so legal now, It's amazing how much of these sports cheats they can detect now. Anything stands out and it's flagged. Instead of the Vegas Strip working together to catch cheaters, it's the entire country, the internet and computers now. Make odd bets at your own peril, because it's a corporate enterprise now and they catch that stuff better than your local mafia.

Who cares ......... Americans believe that fast food, alcohol, and prescription drugs are bad for you also ........ has not changed their consumption.
