People are skipping over the fact that when Gannon was with the Eagles what two seasons they won a Super Bowl they had a very good defense could have been more the players than the coach but I don't know I don't know how to think of him I know he's low on my list that's for sure..

if Whitecotton just followed Fluse no thank you but if he has his own thoughts that seem obvious how to make D better then

I think I'm with you I'm probably just gonna get what wasn't here 'cause at least you might get some fresh ideas so I'd go with Gannon..

They have talking about focusing on the back end. I wouldn't be surprised if they zeroed in on whoever is available out of Downs, McCoy or Delane at 12

I don’t get the hype. His defense wasn’t that effective. Give me a guy who ran a D with an avg talent on the field and had success. That’s why you need since in all likelihood we are gonna improve our defensive talent but you aren’t gonna have elite defensive talent. It’s gonna take more than 2-3 new players to accomplish that

There's only maybe 2 or 3 DC in the NFL that fit that criteria. And those guys are entrenched.

Most on here are putting way too much on just how much effect a DC has. Yes, it's important, no doubt, but talent is #1, and #2 is not remotely close.

Good coaching and scheme can make players better. Obviously you need talent but you’re only gonna add so much talent this off season. A goid dc can get this team to an avg D with the 2-3 additions we can add.

The scheme for the Cardinals is unique to them. Jonathan Gannon transitioned to a Fangio-adjacent system when he took over as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator in 2021. One of his key departures from Fango himself was the use of Quarters instead of the Cover 6 (Stuff)/8 system preferred by Fangio.
Gannon worked for Mike Zimmer in Minnesota and then Matt Eberflus (Cowboys DC) in Indianapolis before moving to Philadelphia. Neither one of those coaches is seen as a split-field coach.
Zimmer is multiple, but static, and is known more for his double A-gap pressure package. Eberflus is a traditional 4-3 Cover 3/Tampa coach, again, nothing even close to resembling what the Cardinals are doing now.
The past two years have been defined by the high use of Quarters while utilizing a five-man front. In 2023, the Cardinals led the league in Quarters usage at just over 30%. The defense used the extreme talents of All-Pro Safety Budda Baker, moving him around and placing him in their three-high structure as the Middle Safety. Nickel Garrett Williams' hybrid ability allowed him to morph into a box overhang or deep Safety, depending on the call.
Schematically, the Cardinals were still using their unique three-safety alignment, but were adding more pressure and more disguises. 2024 saw the Cardinals jump to seventh in Blitz Rate (31.8%) and fourth in coverage disguise.

I don’t real want Gannon but if he ends up getting the job, I don’t want to hear an entire season of “hur dur Eberflus” when our defense doesn’t look like that at all.

We all know that most fans can’t tell the differences between zone and man coverage, let alone cover three vs quarters.

Most of the Zone gets 90% of its knowledge from subject lines of threads and twitter blurbs. I wish we could all do better, me included.

Give me Parker or Leonhard just so we don’t have to hear people misunderstand our defense for an entire season because Bobby Belt and the Fan can’t stop talking about Gannon being on Everflus staff in 2019.

Well, give me Parker or Leonhard because I like them, but since the Zone has been “imprinted” that they are “good” and Gannon is “bad”, it would also simply be less frustrating all the way around, at least when it comes to talking here.

Im not as bearish on Gannon as most. I think the type of scheme he runs is what we should be running. But thats also the other candidates. He has had success with defenses built on strong interiors, and he will have that here if he is the guy.

Out of the 4 that are most linked, he is my last choice. However I think we could see significant improvement under him

I think a good DC and some added talent as well as staying healthy can get you to avg. if you look at points to get from dead last to 16th is one less TD a game. We won’t be an elite defense but avg is reachable if we draft well and get a real DC who uses players at what they do best. Stop trying to put square peg in roubd hole
