An interesting observation (of mine)...

The more I watch Romo play, the more he reminds me of a particular quarterback. Not exactly, mind you. So don't jump to some apples-to-apples disagreement. But the more I see him, the more I think of Chad Pennington. I know that Romo idolizes Favre, and I guess I can see some of that styling. But really, the quarterback he reminds me most of is Chad Pennington.

Now, I think Romo is both more mobile and has a stronger arm than Pennington (though to what degree, we really don't know). But they seem like very similar QBs to me; accurate, smart, decisive, read defenses well. Their style of play is more sharp & surgical than overpowering.

And then it got me to thinking, Bill Parcells drafted Chad Pennington in the first-round during his time with the Jets and obviously thought he "fit" his system well. And as I look at our offensive skill-set, I'd have to agree. We have a lot of weapons, and we really need a quarterback who is all the things that Pennington... and in my mind, Romo... is.

So, aside from the potential Brett Favre and Tom Brady comparison's that are inevitable, I believe that Romo may have more in common with another quarterback who Bill Parcells just happened to hand-select to run his offense years ago.

And I'm thinkin', that can only be a good thing...

Romo was a Payton selection more than anything else, but I like your thinking

FYI, Madden said that this situation reminded him of putting in Ken Stabler as his starting QB in replace of some old head, because he was mobile, Stabler may be a more apt comparison

can't believe something Madden said is actually making sense

Interesting post.

I lenough. His preseason outings didn't particularly remind me of Chad, and under duress last week was not the time to evaluate him, much less draw apt comparisons.

One aspect of Tony's game you won't find in Chad's is the gun-slinging tendency. I like this element in Tony, but it has to be controlled. Chad, whether through his father's influence (a coach), his college experience, or the training of his OCs in New York, Dan Henning and Paul Hackett, always took good care of the ball....in fact, he was finally played in an attempt to provide a more stable alternative to Vinny T's turnover prone game, not just to introduce youth to the position.

I hope Tony is going to be given freer reign in Bill's offense than Chad initially was in Hackett/Herm's....dink, dunk, draw that enhanced Pennington's accuracy and decision making, but was fine tuned to induce sleep. Chad is ultra cerebral...Tony's 'moxie' something very different.

The QB Tony still reminds me of most is Billy Kilmer. I reserve the right to update that comparison, in the future, but that sawed off swagger and straight-backed cockiness of Romo's makes me recall the only Skins qb I could ever stomach ..and one who as a kid I thought was waaayyy cool.

Aside from the obvious Favre comparisons, Romo reminds me more of someone like Drew Brees. Neither of them are big, but their arms are strong enough. They also exhibit good leadership skills, and they have a great ability to read defenses and get the ball out to their playmakers.

He doesn't remind me of Pennington at all. I would say Delhomme the most and I am hoping a little less of Jake the Snake in his next game. Actually, he in some ways looks like Tony Romo to me. Not to be funny, but I think he looks very unique in some ways. No way Pennington reads defenses that fast. Looks like Favre in that respect. Has mobility like Jake the Snake and makes poor decisions like him thought Jake is a veteran and still makes those mistakes. Lets hope some day people are comparing and hoping their QB looks like Tony Romo.

I just watched the Panthers/Bengals game again and i think Delhomme isn’t playing all that well. He missed numerous open guys and his passes don’t have the same zip Romo’s passes have.

I think Romo reminds me of a combo of Drew Brees and Chad Pennington, so here's hoping he can produce on the field!

Romo doesn't remind me of Delhomme or Pennington at all...

Romo reminds me most of Jake Plummer. (I also see the Brett Favre comparisons... and maybe a dash of a young Jeff Garcia)

for better or worse, I'd say Jake Plummer.

let's hope it's "better"...

"Reads Defenses well"...Throws 3 picks in a half.

Something doesnt add up right there.

If I had to choose a guy, I would say... Joey Harrington. Flashes and flushes.

EDIT:ultra5, my initial thought was Plummer, but I havent seen the same type of elusiveness in game situations.

Romo reminds me of a combination of Joe Montana and Drew Barrymore including the petulant lips and pouting breasts...

We are degenerating from singular quarterback look-a-liking to hybrid or composite quarterback comparatives. This churning process is like jumping into a barrel of teats and coming up sucking your thumb.

How about reserving Romo perceptions after he completes a series of upcoming games that will help define him.

I agree with cowboyed. It's a bit early for this kind of comparison. Let's see what we have for a while.

You know, the more I see Romo play ... and believe me, I've seen thousands of seconds of his play, I gotta tell you, he reminds me a ton of Joey Harrington, David Carr, Byron Leftwich, and Peyton Manning. He even reminds me alittle of Eli Manning ... cept that Eli wiped the floor with this kid.

But anyhoo, maybe it's alittle early to be making comparisons.

Kinda silly, ain't it???

We fans have falling in love with the new quarterback syndrome. The honeymoon is on.

Romo made some dangerous throws that ended up being completions the other night. One to Terrell and the other to Witten. I hope those throws aren't picked this week.

You are on to something here. When breaking huddle and approaching the line of scrimmage Romo's posture and head movements are similar to those of Kilmer.

no one is "annointing" anyone. we are simply making comparisons up to this point.

none of us really know how this kid will turn out.

if this thread is of no interest to you, then why did you find it important to reply?
