Nine-wins streaks are crazy talk. They just don't happen around here, even in the best of seasons lore.

This has been a fun and unexpected ride with a defense made of duct tape and super glue and a QB we're watching evolve from embryo to the larval stage, past pupa and into a full-grown NFL quarterback right before our eyes. It's like time-lapse photography.

But there's still this gnawing curiosity surrounding this team and this season, which wasn't supposed to be this, but suddenly is. Is this team really a 9-1 caliber team, or is the other shoe going to drop soon?

Wins in September and October are cute and all, but seasons are decided and remembered from Thanksgiving forward. That's where legendary seasons are forged. And while this team has important ingredients to that measure, there are some still major blemishes to cover.

Yes, a forceful running game with a great line is valuable as the elements turn wintery. Yes, a quarterback and offense that possesses the ball and doesn't turn it over is tremendously critical as well. A defense that doesn't give up big plays is vital, and a kicker like Bailey is gold in a bottle, too.

But this remains a flawed roster in key areas. The pass rush is anemic. The run defense is exposed. And an opponent with a talented receiving corps can run free and easy through this secondary, especially with Claiborne and Church out and Scandrick playing with no confidence.

The Dallas offense is incredibly efficient, but is it capable of outscoring high-caliber teams? That's the only ticket to the show.

You can only play the teams on your schedule, but this Cowboys schedule is looking weaker by the minute. Only two teams that Dallas has played have a winning record right now, and Dallas only beat one of them. Even that came with an asterisk as Kirk Cousins missed easy touchdown passes that would have given the Commanders a semi-blowout win in Washington. Cousins isn't doing that these days.

Sure, had some of these teams beaten Dallas, they'd have winning records, so the Cowboys are partly responsible for those records, but I only see three teams that Dallas has played that might make the playoffs. The Giants, Commanders, and either the Steelers or Ravens.

The combined record of the teams Dallas has beaten is 31-67-1. It gets tougher from here.

New York 7-3 Loss
Washington 6-3-1 Win

Chicago 2-8 Win
San Francisco 1-9 Win
Cincinnati 3-6 Win
Green Bay 4-6 Win

Philadelphia 5-5 Win
Cleveland 0-11 Win
Pittsburgh 5-5 Win
Baltimore 5-5 Win
Washington 6-3-1
Minnesota 6-4
New York 7-3

Tampa 5-5
Detroit 6-4
Philadelphia 5-5

We're going to know a lot about this team in the next three weeks. An expected shootout with Washington this Thursday, followed by back-to-back road games capped by a what could be a first-place shootout with the Giants in their stadium.

A defensive offseason should prime this team for many years to come, but the here and now is very much a mystery.

Wow. 9-1. That's crazy. But what will it mean come playoff time? I think we all share in that curiosity.

Just what have we here?

This Commanders game is the most difficult game left on our schedule. They have so many weapons on offense. The Skins can run it and throw it. We are thin in the secondary and cannot rush the passer. The Skins want revenge for a game earlier this season they felt they gave us. And in a climate controlled environment like AT&T stadium...this game is ripe for the Skins offense to put on a show (like they did a couple of years ago on Thanksgiving). Green Bay offered little resistance and the game was not physical enough to where the Skins are licking their wounds today.

Factor in the quick turnaround. Playing too very physical teams in Pitt and Baltimore back to back weeks. I think this team is physically and emotionally drained right now. And Baltimore tried to beat the Cowboys up. I really wish Zeke had gotten more help than he has gotten to this point. Not sure WHY McFadden is not ready by now. Morris looks to be done. Dunbar is useless. We have a real chance this year and we could easily blow it ASSUMING a 21 year old rookie RB can ball out for 16 games plus playoffs. I always want my Cowboys to win...but somebody needs to give this backfield a dose of energy. When Zeke is not on the field...it seems like an automatic 3 and out. Let's hope Morris wants to exact some revenge on his old team on Thursday.

This week schedule talk is seriously flawed. Who have the Patriots played? Who have the Seahawks played? You play who is on your schedule and we are deserving of that record. Also we play in the NFC east possibly the toughest division in the NFL.

Yep, and the Cowboys have a loss, a gifted win, and an overtime win in those three. The second pass through the division will tell us a lot.

Dallas only needs 3 wins to lock up the NFCE and first round bye. If they stay focused they will have 0 issues being in a great position for the postseason. Zero. Nada.

I agree. Playing the Steelers and Ravens in back to back weeks is physically and emotionally draining. Those are championship organizations from top to bottom. They will test your mettle on many levels. Committed and passionate fanbase. Prideful players and coaches. Impressive to beat both those teams. Curious to see how we respond on a short week after facing those 2 teams.

Not if they don't beat the Giants.

New York has the Browns this week, so pencil them in at 8-3 right now. If the Cowboys lose to Washington, you have a virtual tie in the division this week.

9-2 vs 8-3 is not a virtual tie. They still have to gain another game on us. They could beat the Cowboys to gain a game, but it sounds like you're presuming they win out. I don't see that happening.

Five games that look like gimmes in retrospect (Cincy and GB didn't necessarily seem that way at the time, but they were already falling apart when we played them.)

Zero gimme games in our future. TB beat the Chiefs this week and took the Raiders to overtime. I thought MIN was falling apart, but Sunday reminded us that their defense and special teams still make them dangerous. We should be and will be favored in all of these games, but even if each game is a 60-40 proposition, the odds say you should only expect to win about 4 of them. Fortunately, that's all we need to clinch a bye (but we'd still need SEA to lose once for HFA).

We won in GB. We won in Pit. We beat Philly and Wash. We beat Cin and Balt.

Make no excuses for the schedule. You play whoever is next and go on.

Ask Kansas City about that after losing to TB yesterday.

If Dallas gets 3 more wins, the Giants would need to finish 5-1 to be in the tie breaker you mention. What are the odds of that happening? Again, zero. Nada.

I wouldn't pencil the Giants in any game they play. Cleveland could just as easily beat them this weekend and that wouldn't surprise me one bit.

What makes you think this team is physically and emotionally drained right now? I haven't seen a single thing to suggest that. If anything, it's been the opposite.

I just don't see a physically tired, and mentally drained team for our Thanksgiving matchup against the Commanders. With the infusion of youth (2 rookies, QB & RB) our team feels energized.

The Cowboys have been hosting this game since the legendary Tex Schramm. Do you think they forgot how to manage the team on a short week? Losses come with a lack of talent for the most part, but this team is a band of brothers feeding off each other and playing for the man next to him. The culture is completely different from years past, and more reminiscent of early 90's teams.

This team knows the stakes. Sure, we could lose this game, but we've only lost one game by 1 measley point with two rookies just getting their feet wet on a botched "get outta bounds" play by a vet WR. That's it!

I'm not predicting a blowout win by the Cowboys, but I'm not worried about the short turnaround either.

you forgot extremecowboyszone.com rule #1, other teams team behind us will win all of their remaining games, including both teams who are behind us and still have to play each other.
