Hamstrings aside, how plausible is it that Austin takes a pay cut this year, like Free did and elects to stay with the team? Assuming you were pretty sure he would be healthy this year does it make cap sense (and roster spot sense) to keep him around. It is doubtful he will get a big payday anywhere else. What are the pros and cons?

I think this is an underrated option. Cutting him creates a new hole on a team with several holes already.

I think that one plays out after the draft. We'd likely use Miles as a June 1st cut so there is no hurry here. He's not getting big money anywhere given his injury problems. Ultimately, it comes down to whether we invest a higher pick on a WR

It's been discussed but it would have to be down to like 2m to make it worthwhile. They save 5.5m if he is June 1st cut.

The draft is WR deep and there are already a lot of vet WRs on the market.

I think Miles is gone. I think Dallas will go with Dez, William, Harris and Beasley. I like Miles personally but I think the guy is done.

Maybe, but I doubt it. There will be a sizable market for him, with the way this draft is looking to shake out Austin could easily be the #1 WR in New England, or the #2 pass option in NO after Jimmy Graham. San Diego could also want to bring him in and slide him next to Keenan Allen. Also, he is the absolute ideal #1 in the Panthers system if Steve Smith is gone. There are a dozen teams that will likely be bidding for him, he's not Ware in that we are the only team that will pay him big bucks. He's going to make about $5M with us this season, not ridiculous to think he can get more than that on the open market, it may be a one year prove it Aqib Talib type deal, but with so many teams that have crazy cap space he could definitely manage to pull a 1 yr 6.5M contract or so. A team like the Panthers, Saints or New England would likely be willing to lock him up for 3 years at 18-20M.

This is a deep draft and free agency at WR for sure, but not many WRs have proven to have the mental grasp of the game, and maturity that Miles has. Can't see New England or New Orleans bringing in a dense clown, so Miles certainly has a spot in this league as a #2 WR at worst. Even if NE or NO was able to get a rookie they'd like I doubt either would be foolish enough not to bring in a sure thing as well.

I honestly thought about this option. Romo and Murray are real close with miles and I think it could hurt the morale on the offense. Take a huge paycut and stay.

Austin WILL take a pay cut one way or another. Even if Austin accepted vet min to stay here, I don't know that I'd want him back. It is time to move on. He brought absolutely nothing to the table last year. Fans are sick and tired of his play and his pulled hamstrings.

I don't think cutting someone who is worthless creates a hole. Austin was paid for what he did in a brief stretch in 2009. Classic Jerry move there.

You can find a WR in the draft cheap to do what he did last year.

Do i hate to see Austin go, yes, is this on the Cowboys, only if they keep him. Plenty of other options, and maybe time to see what our other guys can do. I have been hard on Terrence Williams, but a lot of posters here stand by him. They see something i dont. I would be okay if Dallas stood by him and gave him a shot, or Harris.

They need a roster spot to develop another outside guy and I don't want to cut Beasley or Harris.

Outside of last year he has been a top 5 WR when healthy since his breakout... even though he's been rarely health. He's a case study on how injuries can derail a career.

My viewpoint is that if Miles wants to take a pay cut and stay..

I'd be fine with that.

And give him incentives to reach more as he plays and accomplishes.

It's not his fault Jerrah pulled the trigger too quickly on him.

But they still need to draft for a WR.

We have little depth if either the WRs goes down.

And they ALWAYS go down.

Its just a question of when and how badly they go down.

I think you have to have 3 starters at WR if only for the 3 WR sets.

Hard to afford it when your cap is still a mess long-term

I will concede the point that Miles Austin could be a progress stopper if we keep him. But if we don't get an acceptable developmental type of receiver in this draft to replace him, then his retention might be a possibility. Either way there is no urgency to make this decision until after the draft, as long as we are cap compliant by the deadline.
