Another thought on why McFadden may have been signed

I know McFadden has had a poor career in Oakland, but just reminded myself of his start.

At his size, he ran a legit, official 4.33 40 at the combine, and several coaches had him at the 4.27 unofficially.
He ranks 2nd all time among SEC RBs behind only Hershall Walker.
His ROOKIE contract back in 2008 was for 60,000,000 dollars with 26 million guaranteed.

He is also very good in the passing game as a receiver and as a blocker, so maybe he is a poor man's CJ Spiller, an upgrade at 3rd down back while we run a rookie back and let him develop in pass protection. I think he will get a chance to compete, but my guess is he's a vet who is very good in the passing game and will lower the risk to Romo with a rookie RB/Williams/Randal.

The odds are against him, but he came to the NFL with tons of ability and only .06 behind Chris Johnson's 40 time...pretty freakin amazing for 6'1" and 215 lbs.

McFadden came out the year we had Cleveland's #1 and I was hoping they would suck bad enough for us to draft McFadden. Cleveland was actually decent and we ended up drafting Felix Jones much later in the 1st round. McFadden is a homerun back with great athleticism, the issue is his durability.

If healthy, he's going to show some of the explosive, to-the-house speed that DeMarco lacked. That's a big if though.

McFadden isn't even worthy as a backup, EXTREMELY poor signing in my opinion.

If we do nothing but use him in the passing game as a receiver and blocker with the occasional draw, it will be worth his salary. We already know Randal and Williams have been poor in pass protection...that leaves a rookie. McFadden is being paid like a specialist, not a work horse back....works for me.

I'm not downing the move, but at 27 there is no way he runs a 4.3 now. He is probably closer to a 4.5 at this point in his career.

As for the move, it was another one of those low risk / high reward contracts that we have been seeing alot of here lately from the Cowboys administration and I could not be happier.

Randy Moss didn't look good in Oakland either.... just saying

Yes, but the worry with McFadden is he didn't look good as other journeyman type RBs on the Raiders over a fairly long duration:
  • In 2014 Latavius Murray (5.2 ypc) averaged nearly 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.4 ypc)
  • In 2013 Rashard Jennings rushed for twice as many yards and 1.2 yards more per carry (4.5 vs 3.3)
  • In 2012 Marcel Reese (4.6 ypc) and Mike Goodson (6.3 ypc) collectively average 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.3 ypc)

Gurley, the track star, ran only 4.45, and Gordan a 4.52.....just saying McFadden has the size, speed, hands, and open field ability to excell in the passing game. I would expect Williams, Randal, or a rookie to carry the load as ball carrier.

I'm not saying 4.5 is bad. I'm simply saying you can't expect McFadden to do now what he trained for weeks (maybe even months) to do at the combine.
