Re: when we went to navy from royal blue: I believe it was for the 1981 season
Re: gray numbers on navy jerseys: that combo is very difficult to see on TV or even in person; I think white numbers are much easier on the eyes
Re: "throwbacks" -- they aren't, despite the name. Compare today's "throwbacks" to the original jersey from 1960-63:

The biggest difference is the color: the original unis were royal blue, not navy; its hard to tell from the Meredith pics, so try this one:

Notice how the white shoulders on the original jersey tapered at the neck and below the numbers (almost a football shape?). The current "throwbacks" don't do that.
Also, the "throwbacks" have a huge "yoke" that connects the two shoulders; the originals didn't have that. I know we must have a nameplate now, but the effect of the yoke is too overpowering, IMHO. Instead of a contrasting color, the yoke s/b the same color as the jersey with the nameplate consisting of the jersey color and opposing colored letters.
This way, you can see the player's name, but w/o the yoke effect. This is exactly how the 70s road blues were done. The nameplates were blue with white letters -- it shouldn't be hard to do that on a true throwback.
Since this is the Cowboys' 50th season, and since we're playing three games against original AFL teams in their throwbacks, I wish Jerry would get with the program and dress the Cowboys in honest-to-goodness throwbacks for a change.
But that's just me . . .
