Another Uniform Discussion...

Since we're talking uniform records, does anyone know the record in the most recent throwbacks? If I'm not mistaken, it's pretty good.

Well, we only wear them at home, where it's easier to win, so ...

Hey Fred (and others), what did you think about the throwbacks we wore that one game against the Lions, I think in 1994 or so? Can't find a photo on Google right now, but a sports bar I used to go to (since closed) had some pics from that game, and I remember thinking those jerseys were much better than the current ones and much closer to "true" throwbacks. For one, they were more of a royal blue. IIRC they also had the white shoulders with the blue star, unlike the current ones. I also liked how the name on the back was in a reverse field... For instance, on a blue jersey there was a white rectangular field and the name was in blue, like some hockey teams have.

I'm sure bbgun has a pic.
I was at that 1994 game when we lost to the Lions. That uniform was a b*st*rd*zed throwback. The jersey was very close, but wearing the current silver helmet completely ruined any notion that the Cowboys would fully participate in the NFL's 75th season celebration. That was my first hint that Jerry & Co. paid lip service to Cowboys history but didn't really respect it.

I read later that Jerry was concerned for player safety if they wore different helmets, so he decided to keep the current helmets. I guess every other team in the NFL at the time gave no mind to player safety as all of them wore throwback helmets in 1994 to honor the NFL's 75th season. I mean really, how could a different paint-job impact player safety?

Re: the ROH comment: yes, I give credit for Jerry inducting pre-'89ers like Landry, Lee Roy and Bullet Bob. I just wish he (Jerry) would show some real commitment to honoring Cowboys history by developing a throwback that is more faithful to the original, perhaps bringing back "Cowboy Joe" for this one season, and for goodness sakes, by not ignoring the fact that 2009 is the Cowboys' 50th season!

OMG -- those are the infamous "painter's overalls" that were universally scorned. Count me among that group!

A couple years ago on a similar thread, I was able to find a pic of Aikman from that night, but now I can't find it.

I guess that other than the color, this jersey was closer to the current one than I remembered. I still like it better.

Although the jersey is very close, there are several problems with this "throwback" uniform:

(1) Of course, we didn't wear a silver helmet in 1960-63

(2) Nor did we wear silver pants in 1960-63

(3) The socks are all wrong

(4) On a white jersey, the nameplate s/b white with blue lettering. Otherwise, the nameplate gives a "yoke" effect, and the 1960-63 jerseys didn't have a yoke.

I mean, how hard can it be to put together a true throwback? Jerry got it wrong in 1994 by having the players wear the current helmet & pants. At least the throwback he uses now has a helmet & pants that are closer to the original, but of course, they are the wrong shade of blue.

Why is this so difficult for Cowboys management to get right?

Ok, I need some historians.

I want a detailed list of our record....regular season and then post season

at home - white
at home - blue (and yes we have worn blue at home)

on road - white
on road - blue

I'm not aware of any team that has W-L info by jersey color.

And they were ugly as hell

The Wiki illustration is wrong. We did wear white pants that night. But I agree with your other laments.

By george, you're right -- my bad.

The first team to buy into the "blue jersey jynx" might have been St. Louis. AFAIK, they always wore red at home, save for Dallas games. It wasn't until 1984 that we were allowed to wear white again.

But that's no reason to avoid reproducing them as faithfully as possible. Take a look at the Denver throwbacks, or what GB wore back in '94 if you want to see an ugly uniform.

Yep.

So what was the deal with the double star jerseys? Why would we wear one throwback for one game only, then break out a new version of that not quite faithful throwback the same season, never to wear it again? And what happened to the road double star jerseys after 1995? Did we not wear the regular blue jerseys at all in 1994 or 1995? Did we wear the regular white jerseys at all in 1994?

What about the 1976 jerseys with the red stripe?

One word: merchandising. Jerry keeps dicking with the jerseys instead of fixing the pants.

Only the helmets had a stripe.

That's because you're too busy shouting at disembodied voices on the radio. Did you ever get help for that?

Apparently Ive struck a chord, old man. I bet you gett all butthurt about leetspeak and texting too.

Since I youve decided to go this direction. Ill play ball.

Youve completely dated yourself. Youre an old man that insults the new age and pans for the old days of Don Meredith and 89 cent Pall Malls.

You want to talk about no one wanting to trade places with me or try and insult me because I speak out loud when I hear something incredulous on the radio but at the end of the day no one short of being on their death bed will want to trade places with you.

Go on with your bitter self.

Confirms that I'm only 42, not 72.

Goes back to ignoring Fuzzy, who's only 10 years younger.
