Why do people always say 'couldn't be worse than what we already have' when it comes to bringing in literally player off the street?

Of course he could be worse than what we already have. Plus, it's a waste of precious time and roster space if the guy can't play. There's absolutely downside to bringing in the wrong players.

That's nto a comment on Cason, one way or another. I don't know how he's been playing or why he was released. Just a general comment on one of my least-favorite internet phrases that we hear whenever a veteran with a name we recognize is cut.

Did you have the same objection to R. McClain?

Cowboys picked up Dekoda Watson from the Jags after he was cut after the London game. So, they are not above picking up terrible teams cuts.

It's not the player. It's the justification. VFAs get added when you think they're better than what you've already got on the roster. We obviously thought McClain was an upgrade over what we had in the rotation last season.

If he were saying Cason is a clear upgrade over Moore or Patmon/Pellerin, then that'd be another story.

We should been hard after Brandon Flowers when we had a chance at the start of the season.

Cason is a total JAG.

Probably an overused statement, I agree, but in the cases of Carr and Hayden, it might actually be true. They are, by almost any measure, among the very worst starters in the league. They damage this team's prospects every week they continue to start.

He needs a change of scenery and we need some quality depth. I would definitely bring him in and work him in certain situations as our 4th CB. He may not be able to start right now-- but you could worse in terms of depth.

He did change scenes from SD to CAR and didn't get better.

He actually played for AZ in between SD and CAR. And as "bad" as he has played for the Panthers, he has created more turnovers (INTs and FF) than any corner on the Cowboys this season. Cason is similar to Carr in size and athleticism but he is more physical against the run and more aware against the pass. Smart player, better in zone than Carr as well.

And would give Jason Williams another look as well. He is just as athletic as Carter and a better pass rusher from SAM spot. Has also become very good STer and would be an upgrade over Smith or Lawrence. Cowboys need more speed and toughness, and Williams has tons of it.

I don't think either is anywhere near among the worst starters at their positions in the league, but I do agree that it's possible that either of those position groups could be upgraded by the right veterans. Even, maybe, by some guy available late in the season off the street. I think it's pretty unlikely, but it's possible.

Carr doesn't tackle well. Bad problem to have for a safety.

This is only slightly behind the 'can't be any worse than what we've got' reasoning for me. Why do people think coaches have players out of position all the time? It's a pretty rare example where you shift a guy the way we did Crawford earlier in the season and have it work out, and even then, it's always with a guy they were looking for a position fit for in the first place. Unless you're Belichick and you've proven you can take a WR and make him a DB at age 35 or whatever, let's just assume that the positions these guys have been playing since college are typically their best positions in the NFL.
