Any interest in Dwight Freeney?

The idea would be to sign him for a one or two year deal. Have him play in situational downs. I think this would

A. Help buy us time for Lawrence and Gregory to evolve.

B. Help buy us time between Hardy's suspension.

C. Allow us to absorb an injury at defensive end a lot easier. Without degrading our pass rush substantially.

D. It wouldn't be very costly.

E. I don't think he would need a ton of reps to get ready, so there goes the argument about taking opportunities away from other players.

F. Regarding his age, we wouldn't be signing him long term, and for what he could offer us, at the right spot I think he would be a good fit. Remember passing on Julius peppers last year. Probably cost us a super bowl. Not only would we have had a better pass rush, but he wouldn't have been there to strip Murray after beating Martin to the inside.

I find myself agreeing with NFL.com's Kevin Patra:
Kevin Patra said:
With diminished speed off the edge, Freeney's last hope is to latch on as a rotational pass rusher. Given that camps are a week from opening, his best bet to land a job might be after the first week of the season when contracts aren't guaranteed and injuries begin to mount.

There isn't any rush to sign Freeney as a fallback option. The odds are favorable he would be available if something negative happens to our primary pass rushers.

The question I have to ask is this:

Who do you cut to make room for him?

I can't help but wonder, given the Jason Pierre-Paul situation, if the Giants don't bring Freeney in.

I was thinking the same, but since there doesn't seem to be teams lining up to sign him, I think that you can wait for the situation to sort out as training camp progresses.

We'll see. The league and its' players don't stand still waiting to see what the Cowboys are going to do.

He might be an interesting option, especially if Hardy serves that 4-game suspension, but the question remains how you would fit him on the roster.

That's what I meant by letting the situation sort itself out in tc. See which one of the young linemen performs well/poorly. Who is PS eligible. Who gets hurt, etc....

And if we have the luxury of signing him to a non guaranteed contract, we can simply cut him once Hardy returns.

Why at this point? Lets see what the younger guys have, I just dont see why we need to bring in everyone to see what they have left. Time to move on.

Yeah, but wouldn't that mean bringing him in 'cold' with no training camp and not having either guy for the week one game against the Giants?

Or did you mean bringing him to camp and then cutting him before the week one game?

Sure if we get long term injuries at training camp.or pre season. We have our depth as of now though .

I agree
Might be a nice plan if we lose a Lawrence or Gregory to injury. But I think Lawrence is ready to have a nice season and Gregory needs reps

I don't see it.

Mincey was the #1 DE last season and he'll be #3 or #4 by week 5.

Gregory is already likely to be the situational pass rusher with Mincey and Lawrence as the game 1 starters with Mincey replaced by Hardy starting with game 5.

With Freeney on the roster, by week 5 either Freeney or Gregory would get very minimal snaps.

I've been wondering about him too. He had like 47 or 57 QB hurries last year and will be cheap. They wouldn't run to his side either.
