After many, many hours in the hot tub, Matt has sustained a common injury from being submerged underwater for long periods......

PRinc_rm_photo_of_ingrowing_toenail.jpg

The areas surrounding his nail bed became too soft and was susceptible to an in-grown toenail. The time-frame suggests 8-10 weeks after surgery with a keen eye for proper new nail growth. Cleats can hinder the growth process so he can not wear any closed-toe shoes for awhile.

Cowboys took Matt Johnson with pick 135, George Iloka went 32 picks later. With the current staff's love affair with Boise State defenders, I'm surprised they missed on that one.

George Iloka Age 24 6-4/220 23 games, 16 starts, 68 tackles
Matt Johnson Age 25 6-1/212 Zero NFL stats

Someone refresh my memory. But I recall reading that he never had injury issues in college. So perhaps the step up in competition is too much for his body to handle? Because EVERYTHING at this level is several levels above what he ever did. The way they lift, the way they eat....the size and speed of the players. The relentless schedule/routine. At least at the major football factories...you get a decent picture of what pro football looks like. But Matt did not have nearly that type of collegiate experience. Jerry is enamored with size/speed athletes...much like Al Davis was. This is not new. Look at his history. Especially in the middle rounds. He likes to take chances on kids with ideal "measurables". Isiah Stanback comes to mind....who Jerry had the audacity to mention in the same breath with TO....because of physical appearance. There was also the kid with the African name from like Indiana, PA....Owasha Kunsha (sp?). Let's not forget about the LBer we took..this time I believe in the 2nd round....who could not play a lick...but had the fastest 40 time at the combine for his position. Another small school kid...I think we drafted him the same year we drafted Robert Brewster. There is several....and I do mean several reasons why this happens....too many for me to get in to. But part of it is not fulling grasping the reality of your organization. I have said it 1000 times...but we will never seem irrelevant....because we enjoy all the spoils of winning....without having to actually win. Which buys Jerry time to use draft picks on guys that he can give as much time as he see's fit. You can say no big deal...it's the middle rounds. But when you have lost for as long as we have(I am sure some have not noticed it because we are always on TV, have the most valuable sports franchise in the NFL...almost the world, have the best stadium etc....) doing the same things over and over again....and not getting results...is the definition of....

I know many say we have not spent on offense like we have on defense...but let's not act like it has been completley ignored.....Sean Lee was like #16 on our draft board....Bruce Carter had a 1st round grade by this team. Clearly we must have had the highest grade on Mo Claiborne...then we have ever given a DB. Carr is a 50m man....Scandrick is paid like a starter....Ware, Hatcher and Ratliff were good enough for other teams to open their wallets for aging vets (for the record I am on board with letting them walk)...so that is a lot of resources in our secondary and LBer level...and it used to be a lot on the DL....so it may not be all 1st rounders like the OL...but it has not been completely ignored.....the simply are not getting it done. Be it coaches, lack of talent, scheme...but you don't turn in historically bad performances without their being a bigger issue

its too bad his body hasn't held up to give him a fair shot in the NFL. There is no reason to hate on the guy, lots of these project athletes have not panned out for us over the years (pat watkins, isaiah stanback anyone?). Unfortunately for Matt there is no shortage of young healthy guys with a lot of upside who want to play football. Hopefully he gets a shot to show what he can do, but if not, I wish him the best.

Yeah that's the whole issue with the way Jerry Drafts for me. He takes these projects relatively early all the time (4th)and they never pan out.

My "inside" sources tells me he pulled his groin while getting out of the rehab whirlpool tub.

Lee actually has stepped foot on the field in a real life NFL game and produced at a high level when doing so. Big difference.

I am still struggling to see how a small school player who has barely even practiced and has played in less than a quarter of NFL exhibition football is worthy of the kind of infinite patience he has been afforded.

He has those pictures of Jerry with women who aren’t called Mrs Jones (or maybe they are called Mrs Jones but just not the same one listed on his Marriage certificate).

Iloka was for sure on my watch list.
I'm not really sure he's all that great either, but I did like the player during the draft process..

I hope they put him on IR just to see peoples heads explode.

I don't have a problem with him going on IR since he wouldn't count against our 53 and isn't making enough money NFL-wise to dent the cap. If Dallas believes the kid has talent, then give him every chance to prove it, as long as it doesn't affect the ability to field a team.

If he is still injured at the cut down date, I doubt if another team would sign him while injured. The Cowboys could cut him and bring him back if he get's healthy at some point.

I believe some of the outrage towards him is overblown to a degree.

Had he gone on IR immediately his rookie year and then broke his foot last year...I think more people would dub him 'unlucky' rather than somebody that gets all of these chances.

Does he qualify for the Practice Squad?

I would think that he doesn't have enough game time to not be eligible.

The rule is that a player can't be on the active roster for more than 9 games. He was on the 53 for more than 9 games his rookie year but was never on the 46 man game day roster.

I've never been certain if "active roster" is a reference to the 53 or the 46. If it's a reference to the 53 then he's not eligible, but if it's a reference to the 46 then he is eligible.

I think they need to have actual game time play. Being active and not playing, I don't think that counts. It has to do with playing time. Unless they changed that rule recently.
I rember when the PS first came about, that announcers said, he [insert player] still had PS eligiblity left, as he only played so many plays.

Yes, I think it's the amount of games that the player was on the 46 but I've never been certain.
