Randy White, Bill Jones & Steve Denns said on their show tonight that he played lights out and helped keep Ware rested.

What did he do? I don't remember hearing his name mentioned, did he do anything special?

In a postgame interview (on DC.com), Bradie James makes a special point of crediting Butler for a solid job.

He was far from lights out; he was just serviceable.

The TD run by Bell was on him. He didn't set the edge properly at the goal line and let the RB get outside of him. Also, on the run before that on 1st down, he came free and had a chance to stop it for no gain and whiffed.

There wasn't one play in the whole game where he stood out.

Towards the end of the game, in relief of Spencer, he turned the corner well and got some good pressure. But that's about it. He was on par for a rookie.

I blame Hamlin. He could have blown up the play, but kind of lays up when he gets in the hole.

He was free at first but the fullback took on Hamlin and stopped him from making the play.

He did a nice job. He didnt get exposed in coverage and helped do a nice job stopping the run. The Saints only had a couple of good run plays the entire game, and almost half their yards came on one play.

Lol. Did you hear Wade's assessment of him in his PC?

He wasn't that good in pass rush or run D. And yeah, he held his own in the flats but okay.

I think Wade's words were "He (Butler) didn't have a real great game." which, for Wade means he was barely serviceable, so we can probably forget about any form of real rotation developing from this game.

Exactly! I think Brandon Williams' injury really handicapped Wade's D as far as rotations go. They really thought he was gonna to something.

And I do believe a rotation would help keep Ware and Spencer fresh at the end of games. For all the talk about us being unable to make stops late in games, early in the season, I think this has to be the biggest reason for that.

Yes you hit the nail on the head about us not getting stops late in the game. It looks like the only way to stay fresh for the fourth quarter push is to get lots of three and out and control the clock on offense. I really wanted to see Butler step up and show me something, but it seems we may just have to wait till next season and see how Williams and Butler progress.

Right, because Hamlin slowed up. He could have tried to blow up the play, but held up.

.

Wasn't that the one that Bradie James completely overpursued on?

I just watched the game again last night and have to agree.

However, he is someone to get excited about going forward...especially next season and beyond. And given that he's a rook, he was okay.

I watched Ware as a rookie get abused by the Charger's left tackle. I saw him give up the outside to LT on a couple of plays, including a rushing TD.

So, yeah, he has to go through some growing pains and that's expected. I fully agree with you.

But I just had to agree with people saying he was outstanding or anything of that sort.

I like Butler coming in for spot duty, I don't think he is ready to take on a bigger role at this stage. I think like many rookies he will need a full off season program and training camp before he will be put into a larger role

considering that the SD game was Ware's first NFL game I think its understandable that he was not lights out.

I rewatched the first half and I thought he played AWFUL.

Poor lines of pursuit, wandering around, getting caught up in the wash and manhandled. He looked like a rookie who hasn't had any PT.

Sometimes coaches say things to boost a guy's confidence.

Yeah, but from what Wade said today at the PC, it sounds like he agrees with you.

Sometime I will start a thread asking the medical experts if we can expect B-Will to be 100% by next year's camp. He blew the ACL in, what, the second preseason game, so he'd have almost a full year before camp starts. Or is he not going to be himself until much later, like with many RBs and WRs?

Butler is still a little raw, but when you know it's pass, he's pretty good. He'll need to work on coverage and stopping the run to see more time but as of right now he can rush the passer very well.
