Any players still available in FA we might be interested in?

Nothing much else to talk about so thought I'd bring a few things up just for your thoughts.

Someone yesterday posted a rumor that 2 NFL defensive players really wanted to play for the Cowboys; I think something about their agents were mentioned but don't remember what. Don't know anything more but are there any FAs still available that we might be interested in if they come dirt cheap? Any rumors about possible June 1 cuts of vet defensive players for cap reasons?

Also wonder if Jason Taylor isn't trying to get out of Miami? Latest statement that he hoped he'd be better remember for his acting in 10 years then playing football could be part of scenairo to force Parcells to cut him before Dolphin minicamp/TC. Don't think Taylor plans to attend Dolphins OTAs. Someone mentioned Cowboys might be a team Taylor interested in playing for. While zoners are divided on bringing Taylor in & sending Ellis on his way, I want to keep Ellis whose younger & familiar with Wade's 34. But I do wonder how much interest there would be if Taylor does get cut & willing play for Cowboys for near minimum for 1-2 years. While Ware's the man & I still want keep Spencer/Ellis in rotation at the other side, is there any way we could use Taylor to boster our pass rush w/o clogging up the development of younger other linebackers or DEs? Frankly I don't think we can use him but you never can have too many pass rushers.

A young veteran QB maybe. Other than that, I doubt it. Even then, only if the price is very good.

I could see Dallas making a trade for Taylor with a Bobby Carpenter and say a 3rd in 2009. Probably have James, Thomas, Burnett and Walden inside and Ware, Spencer, Ellis and Taylor outside.

As to the money, I wish people would get over that, if we need the money, contracts will be reworked, players such as TO will be resigned to a 5 year deal that will be effectively a 3 year deal freeing up at least 4 million of TO cap number this year not to mention new deals that will be Hamlin, Barber, Canty and Ware before not to long.

An example is Newman, his cap number this year is $2.4 million. He is scheduled to sign this week if not today a new 7 year deal worth approximately $51 million. If correct about the CBA, then $17.85 million is the salary bonus but the deal would be worth an AVERAGE of 7.3 million a year. The first year will probably be minimum salary something like $600,000 and then the prorated bonus of around $2.55 million. BUT, the salary could be in terms of x amount now and then in 2010 another x amount. Something like $10 million now and a guaranteed $7.85 million in 2010 WHICH would make the cap number this year under $2 million thereby saving around $400,000 off of this year's cap.

I would expect to see quite a few deals with the bonus paid at two different times especially since 2010 will be an uncapped year as of now.

Hos this is my thought as well.

Do you think Chris Simms will be available following June 1st? Tampa have way too many QBs, I cant see us trading for him but it is more than likely Gruden cuts him at some stage this offseason.

Would zoners welcome the move I am unsure, but we certainly need another arm for TC.

If this is the case and we bring in a vet QB does he
a) stick and Brad Johnson gets cut
b) do we cut both and Bartel sticks as QB2
c) for the first time in quite a few years do we keep 3

NB. If Bartel has improved as much as they all seem to think there is no way he makes it to the practice squad this year and I cant see him being cut.

Yes, I do think he will be because Tampa is not going to keep 7 QBs.

They won't cut Brad Johnson this year unless he stinks out loud. It would be a move towards the future.

Yes, I can see us doing this. (In fact, I'd like for us to do this.)

We may bring another FB into camp down the road as well, unless we're going to go with 4 TEs.
