It was 1989 (had to be or was it 1990?) when Jimmy Johnson was suffering through his worst season ever. It was, I guess, halfway into the season, and the Cowboys were winless. Winless, I tell you.
Jimma and his 'Boys had gone to New York to play the mighty Giants.
Well, of course, the 'Boys lost.
But I remember this as if it was the first time I kissed little Ruth Gomez after the YMCA teen dance behind the bleachers.
As both teams were leaving the field, Jimma was so dejected that I guess he didn't even want to cross the field to shake hands with Parcells.
Then the camera caught a glimpse of Parcells looking across the field.
It stayed with Parcells as the Giants coach continued to look across toward Jimma. And that big lug Parcells motioned to Jimma. That big lug pointed to his big lug chin and then jerked his big lug head up. He was telling Jimma to keep his head up.
In these suddenly bright-again days of the Cowboys I like to recall that moment when Parcells showed his humanity to Jimma. Parcells wanted to say to Jimma: Keep your pointy little head up. Keep fighting. Stay proud because one day your team will be Giant killers.
As it turned out, it was two more years before Jimma and his Boys started winning games consistently.
I never forgot that act of kindness by Parcells. On that day, in the cold twilight of a Sunday afternoon when the shadows retreat and then disappear into the gloom, I found that Parcells indeed had a heart.
Sniff-sniff. No, it's OK. It's just something in my eye . . . . I have to go . . . .
Go Cowboys!
Beat the %$#@&(^%% out of the Skins. Oh, yeah, baby, we're gonna put the hurt to them!!!!!!!
