I like Nick Cage and most his movies. So the wife and I went to see it on opening day because it DID get a pretty decent build-up.
We weren't impressed. Not in the least.
And, I don't want to blow it for anyone who hasn't seen it and wants to..............so stop reading this now if you don't want is spoiled for you.....
Personally, I was offended by the movie as well. If your a Christian brother or sister, it's just another "Hollywood" slap in the face. It's denigrating and insulting to the Christian community, in that, the basic story is that there is no God or Jesus, and it was just "aliens" all along.
There was a running God/Bible/Christian religion thread throughout the entire movie. From the start to the end. And, I KNEW, beyond A SHADOW OF A DOUBT, that there was NO WAY that this movie was going to end giving my beliefs any credit or glory or cred. So I was just waiting for the insult...................
Sure enough, in a very predictable and expected ending, that's just what happened. The basic story is that after all these centuries and eons of time, there is no Entity, and it was just extra-terrestials all this time. Up to and including the end, with the "new garden of Eden" bit.
If you DO decide to see the movie, keep a sharp eye toward the end, when the "aliens" descend back up into the ship with the kids. They shed their earthly bodies (all blond hair and blue eyed and pale skinned of course) and assume their alien form. As they're rising up into the ship, you'll notice "angel wings" on the aliens. This is supposed to "explain" anything having to do with angels over the years.
I'm not overly-religious and don't even attend church services. I was born and raised a Catholic but haven't practice Catholicism for 30 years. I do, however, have Bibles all through the house and DO read from it daily. I don't preach or prosylitize or nag anyone with my beliefs. And even I was offended at the message.
In closing, if they made a movie with a message like that about ANY OTHER RELIGION, the world would come to an end. They have riots and death threats for even making an unflattering Muslim cartoon!! The Jews would be up in arms worldwide in anyone made a movie with this message about their beliefs. Every other religion in the world is off-limits except Christianity. There now making movies telling us that "it's all just really make believe, and, it's easier to believe it's aliens anyway".
That's what the movies about........................
