Wow. Tried to get from Atlanta to DC today, normally about a 10 hour drive, but it took me almost that long just to get to Raleigh NC, where I shored up for the night and gave up trying to get to DC until tomorrow...hopefully. The interstates were downright treacherous, accidents and cars in ditches everywhere...most of the lanes were pure ice. It's like the local DOTs aren't doing anything for the roads until the work week or something. Speeds on the interstate were from 20-40 MPH for the most part, sometimes slower, sometimes a little faster, but slow slow slow. Boggle. Probably will only be worse tomorrow....wow.

Anyway, just curious. Pretty bad winter storm in the NE...

I feel your pain. A few Christmas's ago I drove from Dallas to Fort Smith Arkansas in a ice storm. 30 MPH from Sherman TX to 20 miles this side of Ft. Smith on I-40. It took a week for my fists to unclinch.

The further south you go in the Mid-Atlantic, the worse it gets... where I live, we got about 6 inches of powdery snow... earlier yesterday, there were a series of accidents in Shenandoah County on Interstate 81, but by the time I came to work at around 10 PM, there was only one of them still being cleaned up... when I first got on I-81, even the truckers were only doing 35-40, but by the time I got up near Winchester (where I work), we were all cruising along at 50-55... like I said, the further north you went, the better the roads got... they weren't GOOD, but they were better...

Now I have to drive back home this morning (I'll be getting off in about 20 minutes)... thank God for four wheel drive...

What annoys me about this is it was only last week that we FINALLY got rid of the last of the snow that we had from that 20 incher a week before Christmas...

That storm came out of Colorado and went due east. On it's way it dropped 5 1/2" of snow on my driveway here in Wichita. I'm just glad we bypassed the ice this time. What really got me was the schools closed Friday for a snow day. Talk about messing up the day. Parents everywhere had to call in sick to stay home. It wasn't a wet snow so the kids could make snowmen either. Down in Oklahoma they got the ice and a lot of it. At one time I heard almost 150,000 were without power.

They close school way too much these days. When I was in school (which wasn't that long ago really) it had to be AT LEAST 6" of snow, and it pretty much had to happen right before school was going to start.

If it was less than that, we went to school, if they had any time at all to work on the roads, we went to school.

Today, if the weathermen and women even hint that they THINK it's going to snow 2" they close the schools the day before. They don't even wait to see if anything really does happen.

I don't envy anyone that has to drive around here. There's lots of snow, but at least it's very powder-y. The last major storm we had in December was very wet and icy.

The problem down here is that they aren't prepared for multiple heavy snow storms in one season. Snows like this haven't happened in the 5 years I've been here.

That being said, people are terrible drivers in the snow around here. I don't like going out in the snow for that reason alone. I'm not worried about my driving in the snow (almost 20 years of snow driving experience), just theirs.

The schools don't want to be sued if there is an accident involving the kids and I can't blame them one bit.

But they had no problem with it 15 years ago? Why not at least see if it really is going to snow, and not take the word of people who are more often than not, when snow is concerned, very very wrong?

If it were your kid that was hurt you'd feel different.

I wondered if it was that way in KC also.

My son goes to a private school and of course they closed school on Friday also. When they close the public schools we always have to watch the scroll across the TV to see if his school is listed. Tomorrow afternoon when I pick him up from school I'm tempted to ask the principle "what were you thinking?" when I see her.

I agree with you that back in the day it took much more snow for school to close than it does today. The main issue I have with that is the snow removal equipment the city uses is far more advanced than it was back then. Additionally they treat the main roads before it starts snowing now which they never did before.

If it was my kid that got hurt, then it means I made the decision to send them to school. If the schools remain open but I felt it wasn't safe enough, then I'd keep them home anyway, but I wouldn't want them closing them without being sure it's bad out.

If we're going to be so crazy about them not getting hurt, then everyone should just home school, so there's no chance at a bus accident, ever.

As an addendum...from NC to DC today was okay...the interstates for the most part were clear. There were some short stretches of still-icy roads, but by far speeds were well in excess of posted max's hee hee. Kudos from me to the various Transportation Departments for doing a hell of a great job overnight in clearing most of the roads. Unsung heroes.
