Anyone else worried about the 4th Quarter Defense?

I think the Defensive Playcalling in the 4th Quarter is going to do this team in if it is not corrected.

I am noticing that when this team has a lead going into the 4th Quarter, Zimmer or Parcells seems to become very passive and elect to play alot of zone coverages and only rush four.

When Shockey made that 60+ yarder, the defense only rushed the defensive lineman and dropped everyone back which gave Eli all day to throw.

I also noticed that when the offensive goes in to Hurry-Up mode, the defenders elect to play a passive scheme that everyone knows, I am assuming. Even when the Giants called a timeout, we still elected to play a very passive drop zone, which I seriously think guys like Roy Williams have trouble with.

This element of our Defensive Playcalling is troubling to me. On some of the Replays late in the 4th quarter, they would showed how Shockey would be getting past the zone but Eli was not finding him.

I agree 100%

It will cost us the game one of these days, and it is something we need to correct. WE allow way to many big plays in the 4rth or even worse in the last 5 minutes of the 4rth.

I'm not to hyped about it right now since we won, but it is something to keep an eye on.

You have to keep in mind there are a lot of rookies playing. They have not been in these positions in the NFL. They are learning and will improve.

Its hard to make a case against our defense when they have given up 19 points to the Raiders, 3 points to the Eagles and 13 points to the Giants, in the last 3 games.

I'm pleased as punch!

Nope, not worred at all against the chargers no TD given up, Commanders two, San Fran no TD's, oakland no TD's, Eagles No TD's, Giants 1 TD.

Sorry fourth quarter defense is not a problem to me

Makes you wonder how Rattay and the Whiners managed to score 31 on us.

Just flabbergasting isn't it. :eek::

If it were rookies botching assigments in coverage, I might be inclined to pass it off as something less significant. The defense can not continue to blow coverages like that late in games, in tight games.

I am not to worried about it. Roy W said he didn't get the call and missed his assignment. That kinda of stuff happens esp when the other team goes no huddle. We might see more of this earlier in games since it seems to be very effective against our young defense.

I am very uneasy about the 4th quarter defensive play calling. When a team can score on you in two or three plays........I would say the playcalling is very suspect.

Stay with the regular D.......and get after the QB. Stay out of that, whatever you call it, zone. It's like the old prevent D that never prevented anything but a score.

Good post CBz

I was beginning to think I have been watching a different team in the 4th quarter then everyone else based on the responses.

I just hate this lax drop zone the defense gets in the 4th Quarter. I dont know why you acquire Glenn and Henry and dont let them play man on man so you can bring the heat and keep those QBs guessing.

These passive schemes will come back to hunt us if Zimmer/Parcells doesnt learn that it is easy for the most basic of QBs to pick apart when the game is on the line.

But we did blitz when Shockey caught the TD to tie it up, besides that we were pretty passive.

:hammer:

Mike I know we were in the lax zone D when Shockey score the TD but . I don't recall if we were in the same zone D on their previous drive...the drive that set them up for the fumble on the 1yd line.

We actually blitzed quite a bit on that drive. The giants, for some reason, executed well on that drive.

On the final TD drive, we blitzed on the first Manning pass to Burress. Manning just made a great play. The TD to Shockey, our defense looked like they were confused. I'm not sure what happened on that play.

yeah, I didnt record the game, so I cant go back an look. I dont know if we were in a 4 down or 3 down line formation when Tiki made his run to the one.

I tell you, every since the Miami Game on Thanksgiving day in 2003, watching us struggle playing those soft Zones, I get nervous when I see them in it, especially when we are not leading by much.

Now that we have a TOP 5 Secondary, imo, that should make the Defensive Coordinators even more willing to risks every now and then in the 4th Quarter.

We did not blitz on that play, we were in a Cover 2 Zone. If you look at the replay, we rushed the lineman and dropped everyone back in zone. He lobbed the ball between Henry and Willie Pile.

We did blitz on the play where Shockey tied the game up though.

You are right we did.......why we can't get a sack in that situation concerns me. If we manup on the coverage maybe it would help.

Teams seem to be able to drive the ball on us when the game is on the line.....Skins, SD, and now the Giants. Something the coaches need to fix asap.

I posted in an earlier thread my concerns.

If this were only one game, then I'd not be concerned.

But San Diego, Washington, NY Giants, and to an extent the Niners (until the INT by Dat) were all able to drive late in the fourth against our defense.

This isn't an anomaly (or however you spell it). It appears to be a trend. With all the close games we're likely to be in, this is very alaming. We cannot continue to allow teams to push the ball down the field with ease.

I'm hoping this is a correctable problem. Not one that is a fatal flaw with our personnel.

I'm looking at the replay right now. You are right, they only rushed 4. On the final play, you can see Roy asking for what the play is to the LBs... right before the play was snapped, you see him look at glenn and raise his hands asking what the play is. They were really confused in the secondary on that play. Should have called a time out there.

We allowed 13 points to the highest scoring offense in the league. And 6 of those were off turnovers.

We got 4 turnovers, and didn't score off any of them.

Nope - it isn't the defense that worries me.
